Edgar Garcia Lopez, recipient of a Gates Millennium Scholarship at Brown University, where he is studying bioengineering. Edgar has guaranteed admission to medical school at Brown U. His goal is to become a doctor. A former highschool champion athlete with an interest in sports, Edgar is leaning towards a specialty in orthopedic surgery.

“It’s not about being smart,” Edgar Garcia Lopez said. “It’s about being driven. That’s how I got where I am. Going to the fields and working, that’s what’s expected of us,

Watsonville’s not just about violence and strawberries. It’s about people going off and making it.”

To Edgar, having a vision is critical, as is setting goals and working hard to achieve them.

He recalled when he was a freshman at Watsonville High School and joined the school's track and cross-country teams. “I wasn’t the fastest, but I saw other people running out there, and I wanted to go and be like them,” he said.

By his junior year, he was the Monterey Bay League champion.

Though rejection is always a possibility, Edgar said the key to success is to never reject yourself. It’s always worth trying.

Edgar was nine when his and brother Cesar's parents, Juan and Patricia, immigrated to the United States to ensure their children received a great education.

While there may have been struggles, says Edgar, their dad likes to say that he’s a true example of the American Dream.

"He worked from the bottom all the way to the top and now he has two kids in the Ivy League.”
