I centered my capstone work on the Reclaim, Rename movement. After the Minnesota Student Association proposed a resolution to rename four buildings on campus (Coffman Memorial Union, Middlebrook Hall, Coffey Hall, and Nicholson Hall), a Task Force of students and faculty was created to start delving into the history of the university and the individuals for whom the buildings were named. You can read the Task Force's report here.
The report was met with mixed reactions. At a meeting in the Spring of 2019, some Board of Regents members accused faculty members of misrepresenting the facts and called for further investigation. While this was not an unexpected outcome, many faculty and students felt that the Board of Regents response was unwarranted and combative. Through my capstone work, a group of fellow students and I worked to keep the conversation alive.
Part of my work culminated in a set of recommendations to University administration on how to keep our campus reckoning with its history of exclusion, colonialism, and racism. We have had several meetings with the President's Office to discuss the possibility of creating a Public History Project, providing more funding to the campus Multiculturalism Center, funding an Oral History Project, and more. While these changes did not happen in my short time as a graduate student, my findings have provided a basis for other colleagues and staff to continue forward.
