In a strange turn of events, today every single one of the guys woke up naturally before our 6:15am alarm. If I had to guess the reason for this was because most of us went to bed around 9pm and slept like rocks throughout the night. Manual labor is a wonderful sleep aid. Looking forward to a day with more of the same, we got to it and started making breakfast. Breakfast this morning was something special, as we had picked up bacon from the grocery store last night. Zach masterfully seasoned the eggs, Derek wrestled the oily bacon, and Cristian braved the glowing toaster of doom. With an elite group of chefs arranged, they proceeded to make breakfast. Overall, the breakfast was very good and was the sole motivator towards getting them ready for more manual labor today.
The momentum of the morning was ruined by none other than Josh (the head honcho of Casa Nica), he had scheduled the taxis an hour later than we had expected so we all got to sit around and enjoy our chosen distractions, whether they be of the book or phone variety. When MY BOIIIIII Chepe and his friend showed up with their taxis, Dr. Basha happily abandoned us so that she could go get gravel from the gravel place. The remaining 5 of us piled into the 4 seats of the taxi with all of our land moving tools in the back. While we did not expect an interesting taxi ride, we were greeted with a cacophony of knocks and clunks from the rear of the car. Derek initially thought it was the tools clanging around and reached back to steady them. Much to his surprise the tools were not rattling around and the lovely lovely sounds of metal hitting metal were coming from the rear suspension of the car. Derek informed the others of this and we all began wondering how far we would make it. We did end up making it in one piece but the taxi did have a flat tire.
For a few minutes all of us worked together to start the two dirt baking fires. Derek was very pleased to be able to play with fire. Dr. Basha showed up soon after with her dirt bags. Dr. Basha, Zach, Trevor, and Derek worked together to spread the remaining gravel on top of the french drains. Once the drains met Dr. Basha's minimum prettiness requirements, Dr. Basha, Derek, and Trevor all left to head home and work on other projects.
The other group, Cristian, Giselle, and Zach, worked on decontaminating dirt for the second day in a row. They set up the aluminum sheet and spread dirt on top and waited for that to reach 176 degrees Fahrenheit. On the other fire, they placed a large pot filled about halfway with dirt onto a metal grill of sorts and also waited for that to heat up. Unfortunately, they were running short on dry wood because they had burned plenty of it from yesterdays fires, so it was challenging trying to keep both fires burning strong. Cristian found a dry fallen tree and Zach found dry bamboo and they used both of these to help maintain the fires. To their surprise, the flames produced by one of the fires reached almost 3 feet above the ground so they quickly took some wood out of the fire.
Once the dirt was sterilized, Giselle, Cristian, and Zach had to wait several more minutes for the earth to cool down. From there, they shoveled the dirt into a large sack and planted more fungi seeds. When this was all done and the seeds were watered, they quickly cleaned everything up and took a taxi back to Casa Nica.
Derek and Dr. Basha spent the afternoon conquering the Simblee kingdom. Simblee is a Bluetooth enabled microcontroller that Dr. Basha decided to use for the weather station that we're redesigning. Dr. Basha worked on coding the device while Derek tested the solar charging setup for the weather station's battery. Initially the charging system was not working. Derek and Dr. Basha were able to fix the system by doubling the number of solar panels. Dr. Basha, when she was not helping Derek, worked to test the various sensors used in the weather station.
