Transition between dioecy and hermaphroditism: The trioecy of Semimytilus algosus (Mollusca:Bivalvia) challenges the evolutionary paradigms in animal reproductive systems

(Fondecyt 3170521)

Research funded by Fondecyt (2018-2021). Here, the sexual system of the intertidal mussel Semimytilus algosus was studied. This species was found to have a rare sexual system called a trioecy. That is, in their populations it is possible to find male, female and hermaphrodite mussels. On the other hand, this species is related, in phylogenetic terms, to the dioecious species Perumytilus purpuratus (chorito maico).
