Genetic studies in mussels of the genus Mytilus present in Chile (SUBPESCA 2013-21-DAC-14)

This project was funded by the Secretary of Fisheries and Aquaculture of Chile. Its objective was to identify the species of Mytilus present in Chile. It was the first such project for blue mussels. For this purpose, RFLP assays were used and about 30 localities were sampled between the Biobio and Magallanes regions (2013-2014).

Researchers: Jorge Toro, Pablo Oyarzún.

Genetic characterization and spatial distribution of the genus Mytilus in Chile (FIPA 2015-14)

The objective was to identify and characterize the species of the Mytilus complex throughout the geographical distribution on the coast of Chile. In this study, the species of the genus Mytilus in Chile were identified, the possible hybridization events between the species were determined, the spatial distribution of genetic diversity was established through a phylogeographic analysis, and a risk analysis was carried out from the point of view of the population production and biodiversity, considering the feasibility of carrying out repopulation and cultivation programs in unused geographical areas.
