Lab 5 : Dye Penetrant Test

Clean the surface to make it free from oil, grease, water, or other contaminants.

Dry surface using cloth or gas.

Apply dye-penetrant on dry - clean surface by dipping, or swabbing or brushing or any other suitable technique.

Wait for dwell time, i.e. allow penetrant to penetrate in surface flaws. Depending upon the type of defect, the time may be anywhere between few swconds to several hours.

Removing excess penetrant by soft and clean cotton.

Applying developer on the surface. This pulls out the dye from the flaws and the flaws are revealed by the colour of the dye.
