Place the specimen on the anvil.
Raise the anvil along with the specimen so that the specimen touches the indenter.
Gradually apply load by means of handle provided on the right side of the instrument.
Duration of application of the load should be 10 to 30 sec. [ for ferrous metals 10 sec, softer metal 30 sec]
Remove the load and Measure the diameter of impression on the test specimen by microscope fitted with a scale.
Calculate Brinell hardness number by using fromula, BHN = Load Applied / Area of indentation
The specimen should be well cleaned.
Place the specimen properly.
Reading must be taken carefully and correctly.
Remove the load after applying.
Applied load (P) in Kgf
Diameter of Indenter (D) in mm
Diameter of Indentation (d) in mm
Duration in which load applied (Sec)
Hardness of two different materials is compared by using Brinell hardness test experiment.
hardness of Material 1 (Aluminum) = ...... BHN
hardness of Material 1 (Brass) = ...... BHN
Brinell hardness test is used for materials with a coarse or inhomogeneous grain structure.
It is used for larger samples.
It is also suitable for forgings and castings where the structural elements are large.
