The Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary (OALD) was the first advanced learner's dictionary of English. It was first published in 1948. It is the largest English-language dictionary from Oxford University Press aimed at a non-native audience. Users with a more linguistic interest, requiring etymologies or copious references, usually prefer the Concise Oxford English Dictionary, or indeed the comprehensive Oxford English Dictionary, or other dictionaries aimed at speakers of English with native-level competence.

The Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary, or OALD, is recommended by teachers and students because it defines words in language students understand, gives useful example sentences, and includes the tools learners need to succeed in English.

It has over 100 million users worldwide and is the world's best-selling advanced learner's dictionary.

The new 9th edition with Oxford iSpeaker and Oxford iWriter make OALD the ultimate speaking and writing tool.

It's a great dictionary (I used to have it on my old kindle in mobi format) that provides a simplified definition for a wide variety of words. I often use it when the default dictionary definition is particularly obtuse, but it's also fantastic for English language learners (as the name would suggest) because it contains a lot of extra info and examples for more common or tricky words. ff782bc1db
