Studying abroad often leads to a lot of new experiences and can create some of the best friendships and memories of your life. There are a lot of highs that come with living in a new country.
However, like anything, studying abroad does come with its low points. Experiencing a new culture is fun, but it also highlights just how far away from home you are.
Dealing with homesickness is something that just comes with the territory of living abroad. I love living in Galway, but not being able to go see my friends and family at the drop of a hate is difficult sometimes. I’ve managed to figure out a few ways to combat these feelings.
I also make a point of spending time with my American friends when I’m feeling homesick. It’s nice to be able to vent to someone who understands and misses the same things that you’re missing.
One of the hardest things this year was being away from home for Thanksgiving, one of the biggest American holidays. We all got together and hosted a Thanksgiving dinner, where we got to share our traditions and food with our friends from other cultures.
When I do have the rare opportunity to go home, I always bring back my favorite snacks with me so I can have a little taste of home when I need it.
One of the best things about Galway is that it’s a very international city so it’s not hard for most people to find the comforts of their cultures. There’s pretty much every kind of restaurant in Galway so you can find comfort food you need. Galway is also a big student city so you shouldn’t have trouble making friends with other students from your home country.
Homesickness can be tough to deal with at times, but the memories and experiences you’ll get from studying abroad make it so worth it.
