Gat is the Man's Basic Hat during the Joseon Period (1392~1897)
Usually made from Horse Tail or Silk Thread, Bamboo Skin.
We can find the Origins of Gat's shape, from the Ancient Silla(BC 57~ AC 935) tomb called Iphyeong Baekhwa Pimo (입형백화피모 笠形白樺皮帽) and Ancient Goguryeo(BC 37~ AC 668) tomb called Gamsinchong (감신총 龕神塚) in Ancient Korea.
In Corea Era (918~1392), According to China's BukSong (960~1127), One of Chinese artist drew the picture called Cheong Myeong Sang-Hado (청명상하도 淸明上河圖). In there, we can find the Corean who visted to China is wearing the Hat called 'Bang Hat'
and then the Joseon Period (1392~1897).
the Hat called Gat(Black Hat) was The Basic of Fashion Item along with Hanbok (Korean traditional clothing).
We can find it every Joseon's Drawings and Documents.
According to Historical Data, <Mongol Empire (1206~1294)> was the Most Influential Country in Northeast Asia. and there was very many type of hat with large brim before whole Northeast Asia.
Mongol Empire has brought a period of fusion of all Cultures. In that process, the shape of Gat was born.
Korea Joseon(1392~1897), Japan Muromachi(1336~1573), China Ming(1368~1644) had to Strongly Influenced by 'Mongol Empire'. That is why the Clothing of Joseon, Muromachi, Ming seems similar.
However, in 17th century, the Ming Dynasty fell, and the Qing Dynasty(1618~1924) came in China. Ming Culture fused with Manchuria Cultures and developed into their own very Different form.
but the Korea Joseon(1392~1897) continued to develop and maintain their own Clothing 'Hanbok', Language and Whole Culture to present.
In Joseon and modern Korea, 'Gat Atelier' and 'Gat Maker called 'Gat-il-jang' were everywhere. and Now, one of the Master of Gat Maker Jeong-Choon-Mo has been making 'Gat' as a Master of Gat Maker for over 50 years in Korea.
actually, Japan Muromachi(1336~1573) continued to develop and maintain their own Clothing 'Kimono', Language and Whole Culture to present too.
