Food? Am I the food?
Foreword
This lesson will give students the chance to explore shoreline habitats, comprehend a seashore food web, and visually observe the impact of losing a link in the food web and its consequences.
Previous Learning
The pupils have previously learned about food chains and thus possess a fundamental understanding of their mechanics. Additionally, they are aware that certain animals prey on others, knowledge they have acquired either through BBC documentaries or by observing it firsthand during walks along the promenade.
Resources
iPad/camera, beach visit, string, seashore food web cards, Chromebooks.
Activities
Create a food web in class with string and practically show the impact of losing one element of the food web and its impact by cutting the string. englandexplore.com/british-coastland-wildlife/ – Accessible resource with the fauna & flora of the coast.
Through exploring the local area, they will come to understand that many factors can affect these food webs. Pollution, human involvement and why it’s important to look after them. Pupils to create a food web/chain from pictures that they have taken from the shore.
The pupils are to look at food webs of our sea shore and the interdependence between the animals. Using their researching skills they are to write their own explanation of what the coastal habitat is like and present a food web.
Look at factors in our local area which have had a big impact on the habitats and the food webs – building the Prom in Llandudno, sea defences on the North shore, off-shore windfarms.
How It Looked
Food chain activity in class.
A different school showing how it would look in the classroom.
Next Steps
Creating a classification key to help separate animals/plants.
Looking into how certain animals have adapted to their environments i.e. the seashore. Creating a digital presentation using green screen to compare a similar fauna or flora to an adapted one.
