Mirana’s and Jefferson’s Life in Storybrooke
(Season 2 Summary)
Mirana’s and Jefferson’s Life in Storybrooke
(Season 2 Summary)
Jefferson woke up to a New Storybrooke and at the possibility that Grace and Mirana could be looking for him, he saw Mirana ignoring the mob to kill Regina and began obsessing over her gardens and had set up a tea party table on her roof… it was as if she was preparing to reunite with him and Grace. He came to realize that he needed to snap out of his depression. He had several ideas on how to reunite with his girls but the guilt of him leaving them in the Enchanted Forest consumed him.
For a slight chance that he would build the courage to see Grace again, he made his way to the toy shop to buy her a tea set and a stuffed rabbit. A similar rabbit to the one he wanted to buy her in the market. Even if she was angry with him, perhaps he could drop it off at her adopted family’s home. However, when he was on his way to see Mirana to apologize to her and to plan their reunion with Grace, the wraith Rumplestiltskin set on Regina terrorized the town and crashed into his car, turning it over with him still in it. (02x01 - Broken)
Jefferson kept calling out for help until David Nolan, or Prince Charming, found him with his ruined Hat in hand. Once David dragged him out of the wreckage, he asked about how to find Emma and Mary Margaret. He informed David that the Enchanted Forest still existed but could not do anything about the Hat since it was completely in ruins. Jefferson made it known that there was no hope for either of them as they both were stuck with two lives in their heads. He ran away before David could take him to jail for not being able to help.
He ran over to Mirana’s apartment but she was not home and when he had found her precious gardens and saw a tea party set destroyed by the wraith, he was heartbroken. It wasn’t a good sign. As if fate was telling him it was a terrible idea to reunite with Grace and Mirana. (02x02 - We are Both)
Passing by Town Hall, Jefferson found Grace’s drawing posted on the board. It turned out that she was indeed looking for him. Jefferson made his way to the docks to think it over, staring at the drawing Grace made. Henry joined him and asked him why he has not seen Paige yet. He explained his guilt over leaving her but Henry believed she would be understanding, as it would be worse for Grace to never know what happened to her father. Henry pointed out that he was left too and how anything was better than nothing.
It was now or never as he decided to go see Grace after school. When Jefferson called out for her, Grace knew her Papa’s voice as she immediately ran over to embrace him. The girl admitted she wanted to live with him and Mirana again. Then, there was the dilemma of Jefferson facing Grace’s adopted family, the Nivens’. He had decided it was up to Grace if she wanted to leave them to live with her father and godmother. Though it nearly broke the couple’s heart, they understood it was best if she stayed with her true family, surprisingly taking the new circumstances fairly well. It was also a realization it was time they made a family of their own. They had an agreement that Grace could see them whenever she wanted to and they could see her anytime they wished.
After Grace packed up, Jefferson brought her to the house to surprise her. She described it as a castle and he and Mirana could be King and Queen. He couldn’t wait to show all the rooms he had prepared for her. A bedroom, playroom and a tea room for her and Mirana to store their china collection. Then he showed her Mirana’s room which was the master suite made for a Queen. It had all the space she wanted including a second floor loft with a collection of books. Books of flowers, herbs, gardens, home remedies… everything Mirana would love to read.
That was when Grace asked if Mirana lived there. Jefferson admitted to not knowing her when they were cursed and Grace convinced him that they should see her and invite her to live with them again.
They both found their way to see Mirana at her apartment that night and became a family once again. However, remembering what happened during the curse, Jefferson and Mirana swore to never speak of the “cursed date” and never mention it to Grace. They were to continue where they left off in raising her, giving her the best childhood she deserved and make up for lost time with her.
When Grace noticed her father’s scar, that was when he finally told them why he left and never returned before the curse. It was a devastating tale but they deserved to know and when he admitted he kept his memories, Grace asked why he didn’t see her when she was Paige and he admitted that he would have been thrown into a mental hospital if he burst into her life claiming he was her real father.
Mirana had also come to the realization why Jefferson was so desperate to try True Love’s Kiss on her and break the curse. She felt extremely guilty as she couldn’t imagine how it was like to see Grace with another family for twenty-eight years. However, Grace pointed out that all that mattered was that they were a family again. (02x03 - Lady of the Lake)
Though it took Mirana some convincing to move in with them, she finally agreed as long as she was able to keep her apartment for those nights she would have to work at the Rabbit Hole late. Despite Jefferson’s disapproval of Mirana keeping her “Annabelle” side of working at the Rabbit Hole, he had to allow it. He was highly critical of Mirana keeping her bartending job and though he claimed it was so she could spend more time with Grace, he didn’t want to admit his extreme jealousy that people would ask her out on dates while she was working there. He hoped every day she worked, no one had asked her out. It caused the hatter much distress but he swore to not make things complicated as he began drowning himself in his work.
Mirana had convinced him to have a fresh start and get back into tailoring and millinery. With Grace’s artistic talent, Jefferson was able to start designing some unique and stylish hats and clothing for Grace and Mirana. Mirana began referring patrons at the Rabbit Hole who were in need of a tailor or even just simple alterations to Jefferson. As people slowly began to trust the former portal jumper, he found business started to pick up. (02x04 - The Crocodile)
At the same time, Mirana had turned her job at the Rabbit Hole into a “New Kingdom” where people began coming to her for holistic advice as well as her wonderful drinks. Grace and Jefferson encouraged her to try practicing magic again since magic was back in Storybrooke because of Rumplestiltskin. However, Mirana came to realize that her Wonderland magic was just as “topsy-turvy” as it was in the Enchanted Forest; it would take ages to accomplish even the most simple spells.
When the monster of Regina’s dead lover was revived by Dr. Whale, or Dr. Frankenstein, Mirana decided it was time for her to learn her magic to protect her family. However, it was difficult without her old spellbook and Jefferson knew only one person in town who could have it.
Jefferson and Rumplestiltskin always had a complicated friendship but he was grateful for him, looking up to him almost like a father figure since his parents abandoned him when he was fifteen years old. He visited Mr. Gold at last and when he had found out that it was Jefferson who had freed Belle from the asylum, he agreed to give him back Mirana’s spellbook.
Reunited with her book at last, Mirana was able to get her plant witch magic back. However, she still needed to practice more of her healing and other forms of magic she was able to perform in the Enchanted Forest. Her magic was more topsy turvy than ever in Storybrooke, telekinesis and teleportation often going haywire. However, she avoided the more dangerous forms of magic such as conjuring fire when she nearly set their kitchen on fire by trying to light a candle. (02x05 - The Doctor)
A few more old friends began showing up in Mirana’s and Jefferson’s lives in Storybrooke. Mirana reunited with her old White Knight, Aster, or Edward Knightley, who was also the White Horse in Wonderland who owned the stables and the Dormouse, Malcolm “Mally” Mosley, whom Mirana had realized was working with her at the Rabbit Hole the entire time. Jefferson had discovered that one of Grace’s teachers was Mr. William, or Mr. Sheldon, an old wealthy benefactor of his.
After discovering that Jefferson’s Hat was completely destroyed, tossed into the fire by Spencer, he felt an odd sense of relief that his old life as a portal jumper remained a thing in the past. He wanted to be known as the Hatter for his talent, not for his magic. That was when he decided it was time he offered his services to the people of Storybrooke, walking around with his new stylish wardrobe and having Mirana and Grace walk around with the clothes and hats he made. He began taking commissions, labeling his works the “Enchanted Storybrooke” collection as perfectly named by Grace. (02x07 - Child of the Moon)
When Mirana had discovered from Henry that David was under a sleeping curse to be able to communicate with Mary Margaret, she made sure Henry was well taken care of, inviting him over to the mansion to play with Grace. Jefferson could not help but notice their games were not much different than his and Mirana’s when they were children.
When Regina visited the mansion to pick up Henry, Jefferson decided to apologize to her, knowing Mirana would do the same to be the better person and says she could take away their mansion if she wanted to but seeing Henry having fun there with Grace, she allowed them to live there. Regina and Jefferson would never be on friendly terms but decided for the sake of their children’s happiness, they would remain civil and stay out of each other’s way. (02x09 - Queen of Hearts)
When Emma and Mary Margaret returned from the Enchanted Forest, feeling incredibly guilty of what he did to them during the curse, he tried to avoid them. However, when Mirana and Grace attended Emma and Mary Margaret’s welcome home party at Granny’s, Emma could not help but notice the daughter of the man that had kidnapped her and forced her to make a magic hat at gunpoint.
Concerned for Mirana’s safety, Emma and Mary Margaret warned her of who she was living with. Though she was shocked at the revelation, she remembers seeing such behavior only one time in her life when he became overly protective of her back in the Enchanted Forest. Mirana reassured them that he had changed and was certain he regretted it, promising he would eventually apologize and perhaps see Dr. Hopper to help with his obsessive behavior.
Upset at the realization of what Jefferson did to them, she confronted him and he had admitted to her what he did. Not only was she upset he resorted to such violent measures to get his daughter back but he didn’t have faith in their friendship and wanted to leave her behind to be alone. She understood how Annabelle treated him but if he knew deep down that they would always be a family, it pained her to know that he gave up on them.
Jefferson confessed to both Mirana and Grace about everything. Then when he admitted to helping Regina retrieve the poisoned apple that put Henry in a sleeping curse, Grace grew upset with her father, calling him a villain. (02x10 - The Cricket Game)
When Jefferson found out that Dr. Hopper was allegedly killed by Regina, he refused to leave the mansion again in fear she would come after him next. He locked himself in his room most of the time and the workshop to bury himself in his work. To protect the family, Mirana proceeded to grow white rose bushes around the property… the very white rose bushes that were capable of sprouting deadly branches of thorns, mauling any untrustworthy visitors.
Both Grace and Mirana avoided Jefferson for a few days until they cooled down. Then Mirana found out that Dr. Hopper was indeed alive and Regina was framed, deciding to talk to Jefferson again. He explained why he felt he needed to resort to such measures to be reunited with Grace and how he had given up on their friendship but admits he was wrong. He promised he would never doubt how strong their love for each other really is, despite his true feelings for her. Mirana and Grace forgave him but they urged him to find a way to apologize to Emma and Mary Margaret and to face whatever consequences headed his way.
That night, the Hatter family decided to pay the Charmings a visit at Mary Margaret’s loft. Emma allowed Mirana to make the tea for them and decided to let Jefferson confess everything to them. Everything from kidnapping Emma and Mary Margaret, helping Regina retrieve the poisoned apple, and indirectly unleashing the wraith. Having Mirana and Grace there helped Jefferson genuinely apologize to them and admit that he needed help. The family sympathized with what he went through for twenty-eight years and somewhat grateful that helping retrieve the apple led to Emma breaking the curse. They all agreed that it was best if he saw Dr. Hopper to be able to talk about his trauma.
David was especially upset but for the sake of Henry and Grace, he agreed to give him a second chance and agreed with Mary Margaret and Emma to not press charges against him and seek help instead. Especially after realizing what they did to Regina, Jefferson deserved to be able to prove himself and grateful he apologized. Hoping to make it up to them, Jefferson decided to offer his hatting and tailoring services free of charge, Mirana offered them free drinks at the Rabbit Hole whenever they visited her… and for Grace to bring Henry all the treats they baked. (02x11 - The Outsider)
After hearing about quite the accident at the town line, Mirana decided to volunteer and distribute flowers. One patient she had gotten to know was a woman who had amnesia, having no idea she was Belle since she had never met her and only knew about her through Jefferson. Mirana decided to introduce herself as Annabelle since most of Storybrooke seemed to have referred to her as such. The poor woman didn’t need to be confused with everyone having two, or in Mirana’s case, three names. The woman appreciated Annabelle not making a big deal about who she was but just wanted to talk to her. She told the woman about the Rabbit Hole and promised to make her a free drink. (02x13 - Tiny)
Jefferson continued to bury himself in his work and when he found out about Cora being in town, he warned Mirana and urged her to keep the protective spell around the mansion.
When Mirana found out about Cora’s death, she lifted the white rose bush barrier spell and they remained to be beautiful white rose bushes surrounding the mansion. The Hatter family felt safe at last though when Mirana was shocked to find out it was Mary Margaret who killed her in order to save Rumplestiltskin. Jefferson didn’t want to express how happy he was that the Queen of Hearts was dead but he reassured Grace that they should be safe. (02x17 - Welcome to Storybrooke)
Jefferson started seeing Dr. Hopper once a week to talk about his trauma during the curse. First, he talked about forgiving Regina and apologizing to her about everything he put her through. He accepted she may never forgive him but he made peace with it and told him they agreed to stay out of each other’s way. Dr. Hopper stated that was a good start.
Another session, Jefferson talked about what he did to Emma and Mary Margaret and what led him to do such things such as being cursed with his memories, seeing Grace live with another family for twenty-eight years, and his cursed date with Annabelle. Then proceeded to tell him that he’s been in love with Mirana for years but doesn’t want to complicate things since he’s happy the way things are. He would rather they be a family than being rejected by Mirana and making things weird. Dr. Hopper suggested he be honest with Mirana before he snaps again and Jefferson promised him he would slowly show her how much he really loves her.
When Mirana arrived home to the mansion one night, Jefferson surprised her with a romantic dinner while Grace was having game night at the Nivens’. She told him how much she appreciated getting another unbirthday surprise. However, Jefferson didn’t know how to explain it wasn’t just another unbirthday. He failed yet again to tell her how much she meant to him and decided to enjoy a nice dinner together. Mirana told him that she made a new friend at the hospital but didn’t know her name as she had amnesia. Then told Jefferson she had to work late the next few days and will be staying at the apartment. As much as Jefferson wanted to protest, he decided to let her do what she needed to do to prove he cared about her. (02x18 Selfless Brave and True)
Mirana continued to visit the woman with amnesia at the hospital, giving her flowers and dropping off a few sweets. Then one day, while at work at the Rabbit Hole, the woman visited her and found out her real name was Lacey. Glad to know the woman finally remembered who she was, Annabelle offered to lend her some clothes and spend time with her at the bar, teaching her how to play pool and taste testing all the drinks she made for her. Lacey had become a great drinking buddy as Annabelle found herself somewhat back to her days before the curse broke; drinking, flirting, and hustling the men at a game of pool.
Jefferson started growing concerned for Mirana as he noticed she had been spending more time staying at her apartment without calling. He visited her one morning to see her actually hungover, a state he had never seen Mirana in before. They argued a little but Mirana felt guilty about falling back into her old ways as Annabelle and realized she had to continue to be there for Grace like she promised. (02x19 - Lacey)
Back at work at the Rabbit Hole, Mirana was surprised to see Mr. Gold there as he made it known how much the Rabbit Hole was never his scene but then found out he was dating Lacey. Confused, she asked Mr. Gold what he’s doing with Lacey when she thought he was with Belle. Mr. Gold admitted that Lacey is Belle but she got shot by Captain Hook and fell across the town line, losing her memories.
Mirana couldn’t help but notice the couple reminded her when she was Annabelle with Jefferson when they went on their “cursed date”. Mirana pointed out that what they had wasn’t real. Mr. Gold admits he doesn’t care as he knows Belle is somewhere in there. He had become somewhat curious about Mirana and Jefferson’s relationship. She insisted they’re just friends. Deciding to stay out of it and not wanting to end up like Jefferson’s predicament, Mr. Gold decided to be everything Lacey wanted him to be, even if it meant acting like the Dark One again. (02x20 - The Evil Queen)
Days later, the Hatter family found out that Storybrooke was going to be destroyed and that it was possible they were going to die. There was first an earthquake and vines and branches began to grow over town. Mirana was working at the Rabbit Hole, swearing it wasn’t her doing. Jefferson was picking up Grace from school and saw the danger heading their way. They both went over to see Mirana and though Jefferson wanted to finally tell her how he felt about her, Mirana saved Grace from a large branch, knocking her out. Jefferson carried her away to safety and then suddenly the trees, branches, and vines disappeared and found that Storybrooke was saved. (02x22 - And Straight on 'Til Morning)
