Mirana’s and Jefferson’s Life in Storybrooke
(Season 1 Summary)
Jefferson was taken to the land without magic, waking up in a lavish mansion up on a hill. However, he was trapped there, unable to leave his home. When he tried to escape, he could only get to the drive-way and was back inside the house. Worse, he was cursed with his memories, knowing he was away from his Grace and his dear friend.
Years and years have passed and he realized time was frozen where no one aged a day. It took a few years but he had finally perfected brewing his special “tea” in hopes to knock himself into an almost comatose slumber. He would adjust the amount if he wanted to sleep for a few hours to a whole day. He kept taking his “tea” for days at a time, waking up only to check on his telescopes for any sign of the “Savior’s” arrival. For twenty-eight years, he tried to plan out ways to be able to see Grace but failed every time. He was only provided with telescopes around his home to watch the town, and see his daughter who had no memory of him.
When Emma Swan rode into town with her yellow car, things began to change in Storybrooke. There was only one explanation to that. She had to have magic. For one thing, Jefferson was able to finally get out of the house, planning out several ways he could try to get out of Stroybrooke, becoming a cartographer in the process. (01x01 - The Pilot)
However, he discovered that no one was able to leave. When he decided to venture out into town, he found himself feeling invisible as no one bothered to notice the man from the large mansion up the hill. He often hid away in the shadows, watching his Grace from afar. He noticed she was friends with Regina’s son, Henry, who always seemed to have the book of stories on him. He seemed to be the only one that believed that the town was not at all what it seemed. Perhaps he could convince Emma that the stories in that book were real and not just fairy tales. (01x03 - Snow Falls)
One day, Jefferson was inclined to make his way to an underground bar called the Rabbit Hole. There, he was surprised to find a familiar face. That familiar face was his dear friend, Mirana, who had become Annabelle Sutherland, a waitress and bartender at the Rabbit Hole. Of course, she had no memory of him but was the only person who he was able to talk to.
At the Rabbit Hole, Annabelle had a knack for making some odd but delicious cocktails. Many of which came to her in her dreams. Her imaginative nature slowly returned to her with the arrival of Emma Swan. She had found herself dreaming various bits of her living in a fairy tale world and in a place that looks somewhat like the world of the book Alice in Wonderland. However, she dared not to speak of them as it surely would land her in the psych ward. Instead, she found herself doodling and writing notes in a notebook, inspiring her to create new cocktails at the Rabbit Hole.
Jefferson was careful not to alarm the woman about him knowing her and her life with him back in the Enchanted Forest. However, he felt nothing but shame when he was around her knowing what happened to him in Wonderland. He could not help but be a bit grateful she did not remember him after what he had done to her. Mirana must have hated him and it would have broken his heart. It also broke his heart knowing that Grace, who he had found out went by the name Paige in that land, had no memory of her either. (01x15 - Red Handed)
For a bit of hope, he had asked Annabelle out on a date in hopes somehow he could be friends with her cursed persona. He found out she lived in an apartment close to the bar and found her houseplants and rooftop garden had become somewhat of an unexplained spectacle. To no surprise to Jefferson, it seems to always be in bloom. With her abundance of flowers, she often donated them to the hospital and occasionally volunteered to distribute them.
However, he couldn’t help himself falling for Annabelle as well. Perhaps he could get her to fall in love with him and thus, perhaps break the curse with True Love’s Kiss. He had heard it was how Snow White and Prince Charming were able to break the sleeping curse. It was worth a try as he knew deep in his heart, Mirana had been his True Love after all this time.
However, Mirana not remembering their friendship (and lack of her heart) caused such an attempt to fail. Annabelle could not take the man seriously as she was used to going on dates with men who only wanted to have free drinks. He could not be with Mirana that way. After refusing to take their date any further, he had to leave and gave up on any hope of her ever loving him and perhaps she had already found her True Love before the curse was cast. (01x16 - Heart of Darkness)
With the impression he would never be over his ex-girlfriend, she was cold to him when he would visit her at work or saw her around town. Jefferson had decided the only love he would have in his life would be Grace. He was truly living in his own curse. Fed up with waiting around for the Savior to break it, he spied on her as he had to find a way to get her to make another magical hat to escape. If Emma Swan would get the hat to work, he would be able to return home to the Enchanted Forest and take Grace with him and perhaps there, she would regain her memories.
After watching drama ensue around town about David Nolan’s wife’s disappearance and supposed murder by Mary Margaret, he found an opportunity to lure the Savior into his home. When he had seen Mary Margaret escape from jail, he followed her into the woods as she was trying to figure out a way to escape, only to be abducted by him and bound and gagged in one of the rooms. He knew very well of Emma’s closeness to Mary Margaret and knew she would go out looking for her. Just as expected as he went out walking in the woods, he saw Emma driving toward his way and nearly hitting him, he faked an injury to get her to take him back home.
After drugging her and catching her finding Mary Margaret and trying to escape, he held her captive at gunpoint and just as the Queen of Hearts did to him, he forced her to make a hat, hoping her magic would make it work. When he was distracted, she knocked him out and attempted to free Mary Margaret. A few moments later, he woke up, took the hat with him and tried to keep the ladies from escaping but Emma forced the gun away from him and then Mary Margaret kicked him out of the window. However, he did not fall to the ground, but disappeared into the hat. For that small moment, it did work as he was trapped inside it for the day, only getting a glimpse of his old home of the Enchanted Forest. The magic did not last long for he emerged back out of the hat and was destroyed in the process. (01x17 - Hat Trick)
When he thought no other plan would work, he found a White Rabbit card on Grace’s bicycle. That could only mean one thing. Regina wanted to see him. Most likely for another deal. In exchange for helping Regina get rid of Emma by retrieving the poisoned apple from the Enchanted Forest, she promised to erase his memories of his past life and create a new one for himself and his daughter. When Regina baked the poisoned apple into a turnover, Henry ate it instead and fell into the sleeping curse. (01x21 - An Apple As Red As Blood)
Jefferson confronted Regina at the hospital who was visiting the comatose Henry. He hoped to collect the bargain they had made. However, she refused as it was not Emma that ate the poisoned apple. Furious at the betrayal, he broke into the hospital's psychiatric ward, drugging the nurse with the same tea laced with a powerful sedative he used to knock out Emma. He freed Belle from the asylum but of course, the woman had no memories of how she got there in the first place. Jefferson could not explain further as he only instructed her to go out and find Mr. Gold to tell him that Regina was the one who locked her up.
One day, he took a walk in Grace's neighborhood and experienced the most curious thing. People began to emerge from their homes and greeted each other as if they had not seen each other in years. It could have only meant one thing... The curse was broken. He could not bear to be seen in case Grace was there. He could not let her see him. Not yet, at least. He fled back to his home, locking himself in. (01x22 - A Land Without Magic)
