Visual Perception
This is the ability for the brain to make sense of what we see, organize it, and interpret it.
Visual Motor allows students to coordinate their hands and eyes.
Common Definitions
Eye-hand coordination - drawing precisely straight or curved lines (you may notice difficulty coloring in lines)
Figure ground - when you can see an object in a complex background
Visual Discrimination- object is classified in color, form, pattern, size, position
Position in space- in/out, up/down, front/behind, left/right
Visual memory- recall objects, shapes, symbols
Sequential memory- remember sequence or chain of letters to form words
Visual Motor integration - receives visual information and uses it appropriately for motor task (ie: writing)
Visual closure- visualize the whole object or picture when missing or hidden
Form constancy - recognize objects forms as the same in various situations
Signs of Visual Perception or Motor Dysfunction
Reversals (b for d, p for q)
Complains eyes hurt and itch, rub eyes, blurs while reading
Difficulty navigating school campus
Turns head when reading across page, holds paper at odd angles
Closes one eye while working, yawns while reading
Cannot copy
Loses the place on page
Does not recognize object or word
Holds pencil tightly, breaks pencil
Struggles to cut & paste
Misaligns letters, messy, irregular spaces, not on line

Scissor use/cutting

Visual Perception Activities
Worksheets and perceptual motor booklets for proprioception, figure ground, eye-hand coordination
Reproduce designs for circle (small, big, but still is a circle)
Chalkboard for free movement resistance, then transition to paper
Trace line or drawing of roadway and drive car
Copy forms, designs ( parquetry, block, pick up sticks, pegboard) to enhance form perception, matching, and figure completion
Construct simple puzzles from pics which the student can glue on sturdy paper then cut
Illustrate stories using crayons, chalk, a felt board, or finger puppets
Draw a pic, label, write a sentence
Create a book and write a play
Form letters of same size and place inside box
