Mr Asumu carried out his basic surgical training in Manchester in the early 1990s. He gained the fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1993 following which he entered the higher training programme in Orthopaedic Surgery, once again in Manchester. The last year of his specialist training was devoted to a fellowship in knee surgery.

He started his career as a consultant in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery at the Royal Oldham Hospital in 2000. He then worked at other hospitals in the North East sector of Manchester as part of Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust. He spent 2 years working in the Middle East as a consultant.
