Get your sticks ready for the season!
ALL POSITIONS: A good stick is everything! Even the smallest changes to your strings can make a huge difference in how you play and how your stick work develops. It’s important to get your strings redone or adjusted if you’ve been playing with the same gear for over a year, especially in MN where old strings will freeze and break in these temps.
The most important component to a good stick is making sure you have a “sweet spot” for the ball; the ball shouldn’t be sitting at the base of your head. This spot comes from your shooting strings. Your top shooting string should be loose. If this string is too tight, it will push the ball out as you catch. The second shooting string — shaped like a U — should not be too tight or loose. You can test this with a couple passes: too tight means your passes will go towards the ground and too loose means your passes will go straight up.
Please watch this video to adjust your own stick before tryouts. Video: How to Tie Your Strings
A lot of the newer and nicer sticks are coming with pre made sweet spots, which is great! Example — Epoch Complete Sticks
If you get a new stick, please keep your old one around. Ideally, most of our starting players will have a second stick on the bench during games.
*Mesh: Mesh is an excellent option for some players but not all. We only recommend mesh for players with a few years of experience or more.*
DEFENSE: Typically, defenders prefer a heavier shaft than other field players.
DRAW: There are some great draw sticks out there (Example — Gait), but we would not recommend them for full field playing. Reach out to the coaches if any draw takers want to discuss specialty sticks or versatile options!
Other Gear
CLEATS: Every player will need cleats. Please avoid soccer cleats if possible and look for something with more ankle support (football cleats are a good option if lacrosse cleats are sold out).
Examples below:
TURF SHOES: Personally, we would highly recommend turf shoes in addition to cleats. They do a much better job of protecting your ankles, knees, etc. from injuries on turf and will help with speed and agility on turf.
Examples below:
NEW PLAYERS: lacrosse goggles and mouthguards are also required for tryouts.

Communication
Communication from Coaches
Every Sunday, the coaches will send out an email detailing the week's schedule and any other relevant information.
Communication to Coaches
Players need to communicate all scheduling conflicts and absences to their respective coaches.
Questions regarding playing time must be initiated by the player after a 24-hour waiting period.
Attendance
Unexcused Absences:
Missing a practice the day before a game will result in the player not playing for the first 15 min of the game and will require follow up communication with Coach Jane and/or Coach Mac.
Excused Absences:
Regardless of reason, missing a practice the day before a game will mean the player is unable to start.
Details regarding the difference between excused and unexcused absences, along with other attendance-related rules will be created by the players. Once decided, the rules will be shared to all via email.
Academics
Academics are a priority; school comes first. We expect all players to manage being student-athletes. Players are expected to communicate academic concerns to coaches. Any academic issues will be addressed on a case-by-case basis.
