3 Days of Red Rocks & Maximum Photo Ops
π November 24β26, 2025 | π₯ 4 Adventurers
When you need epic sunrise shots, Cathedral Rock reflections, and every golden hour moment captured πΈβ¨. So we packed our cameras, laced up our hiking boots, and chased the light through Sedona's most iconic landscapes ποΈ.
This is our love affair with red rocks, endless photography opportunities, and the perfect blend of adventure and artistry π π¨
π Total Hiking: ~8-9 miles across 3 days πΈ Photography Locations: 12+ iconic spots π Sunrise Shoots: 2 | Sunset Shoots: 3 (Golden hour fully maximized! π)
π DAY 1: Arrival & Sunset Splendor
Monday, November 24 | π₯Ύ 1.5 Miles Hiking
π 4:00 AM β Vegas Departure
Started early to maximize our Sedona day β°. The 4.5-hour drive was pure anticipation π .
Route: I-15 S β I-11 S β US-93 S β I-40 E β AZ-89A S Distance: 280 miles | Time: 4.5 hours
As we approached Sedona, the landscape transformed: desert floor β pinyon juniper β dramatic red rock formations rising from the earth ποΈ.
π Download offline maps! Cell service gets spotty in Sedona. Google Maps offline mode is your friend!
β½ GAS STRATEGY: Fill up in Vegas before leaving. Next major gas: Kingman (140 miles). Then Cottonwood before Sedona (20 miles before arrival).
β 7:00 AM β Route 66 Breakfast Stop
Quick pit stop in Kingman for classic American diner breakfast π₯.
Fueled up with eggs, bacon, and strong coffee β. The nostalgia of Route 66 diners hits different at dawn!
π‘ MONEY-SAVING TIP: Eat hearty here! Sedona restaurants are pricey ($15-30 per person). A big breakfast means you can snack through lunch.
ποΈ 9:30 AM β Arrive Uptown Sedona
Rolled into Sedona's vibrant hub with red rocks glowing in morning light π.
First impression: The scale of these formations is INSANE. Photos don't do it justice π±.
π ΏοΈ PARKING TIP: Park in the free public lot on Jordan Road or use the paid lot on Forest Road. Uptown gets busy by 10 AM!
π΄ 10:00 AM β E-Bike Adventure
β° 3 hours | π° ~$75/person | π΄ Fun & scenic
Rented e-bikes and pedaled through red rock trails with Bell Rock as our backdrop π΄ββοΈ.
Where to rent: Pink Jeep Tours, Sedona Bike & Bean, or Absolute Bikes (book 1-2 days ahead!)
The e-bike advantage:
Cover more ground without exhaustion π¨
Stop frequently for photo ops πΈ
Feel the desert breeze while riding βοΈ
Bell Rock views from multiple angles ποΈ
This was the PERFECT way to start the trip! Active but not grueling.
πΈ PHOTO TIP: Dynamic action shots with Bell Rock's massive silhouette. Use a standard zoom (24-70mm) for versatility. Capture motion blur with panning shots!
βͺ 1:30 PM β Chapel of the Holy Cross
Visited this architectural gem built INTO the red rocks ποΈ.
Address: 780 Chapel Rd, Sedona, AZ 86336
The chapel rises from the cliffside with floor-to-ceiling windows framing the desert. Modern design meets ancient landscape = stunning π.
Why midday works here: Yes, it's harsh light, but for architectural photography the high sun creates dramatic shadows that emphasize the chapel's sleek lines against rugged cliffs π.
π ΏοΈ PARKING HEADS-UP: The lot is small (30 spots) and can be busy even at midday. Be patient and circle if neededβspots open up as visitors leave (usually 10-15 minute wait max).
πΈ PHOTO TIP: Wide-angle lens (16-35mm) for the chapel's lines against rugged cliffs. Shoot from the parking area for the full context shot showing how it's built into the rock face!
π 3:00 PM β Red Rock Crossing (Scouting Mission)
β° 30 minutes | πΆ Short walk from parking
Address: 4000 Upper Red Rock Loop Rd, Sedona, AZ 86336
No hiking todayβjust scouting this iconic spot in afternoon light π.
What we did:
Tested compositions with Cathedral Rock & Oak Creek reflections π§
Noted sunset angles for tomorrow's shoot π
Walked the creek to find best vantage points π
This prep made tomorrow's sunset shoot FLAWLESS β¨.
πΈ PRO TIP: Use a polarizing filter to enhance water reflections. Bring a spray bottle to smooth creek surfaces for mirror-like shots!
π 4:30 PM β Doe Mountain Sunset
π₯Ύ 1.5 miles RT | β° 1.5 hours | β°οΈ Easy-Moderate
Trailhead: Boynton Pass Road (high-clearance recommended but not required)
Hiked to a flat-top mesa for 360Β° views as the sun set π.
The golden hour light painted the entire valley in warm tones. We stayed through blue hour for dreamy purple skies π.
THIS is why we came to Sedona! Every direction = postcard-worthy view π¨.
β° TIMING TIP: Sunset in late November is around 5:15 PM. Arrive 45-60 minutes early to set up and catch the full golden hour show!
πΈ PHOTO TIP: Panoramas of the glowing landscape. Set up a tripod for long exposures as light fades. Designate a group member as the "model" for scale in shots!
π 7:00 PM β Dinner at Hideaway House
Savored Italian comfort food with red rock views through the windows π·.
Address: 251 AZ-179, Sedona, AZ 86336 Cost: $25-40 per person
Must order: Pasta dishes, wood-fired pizza, and their signature tiramisu π°.
Book ahead! This place fills up fast, especially on weekends. Call (928) 282-4204 or book online.
Alternative restaurants:
Elote Cafe (Mexican, $20-35/person) - Book WAY ahead!
Dahl & Di Luca (Italian, $30-45/person)

π₯ DAY 2: Ultimate Photography Day
Tuesday, November 25 | π₯Ύ ~4 Miles
π 5:30 AM β Devil's Bridge Sunrise Mission
π₯Ύ 4 miles RT (or 2 miles with 4WD) | β° 3 hours total | β°οΈ Moderate
Trailhead: Dry Creek Vista Parking
Arrived in pre-dawn darkness to capture Sedona's MUST-HAVE photo: Devil's Bridge glowing in golden hour light π .
Essential shots we captured:
π Backlit silhouette of a person on the bridge (ICONIC!)
π¨ Full arch from below with morning sky
ποΈ Sweeping valley panorama from the top
Returned by 9:00 AM with SD cards FULL of epic shots πΈβ¨.
π CRITICAL PARKING INFO: You MUST arrive at Dry Creek Vista Trailhead by 5:30 AM (or earlier!) to secure one of only ~30 parking spots. This lot fills up FAST and illegal parking is heavily ticketed π«.
4WD Shortcut Hack: If you rent a high-clearance 4WD vehicle (like the Jeep for Schnebly Hill Road on Day 3), you can drive it 1.3 miles past the main lot on a rough dirt road. This cuts your hike from 4 miles to just 2 miles round-tripβhuge time saver for sunrise setup! π
Weekend Note: Thursday-Sunday the trailhead closes for parking and uses a free shuttle system. Since you're visiting on a Tuesday, you're clear to drive directly!
πΈ PRO TIP: Wide-angle lens (16-35mm) is essential for the full arch. Bring a headlamp for pre-dawn hiking. Take turns being the "model" in the silhouette so everyone gets THE shot!
π₯Ύ HIKING TIP: The trail is well-marked but rocky. Watch your footing in the dark! The final approach to the bridge requires scrambling over slickrock.
ποΈ 10:00 AM β Fay Canyon Trail
π₯Ύ 2 miles RT | β° 1.5 hours | β°οΈ Easy
Trailhead: Fay Canyon Trailhead off Boynton Pass Road
Wandered through a shaded box canyon to a hidden natural arch ποΈ.
Fewer crowds than other trails = peaceful photography session πΈ. The arch framed by red rock cliffs was STUNNING.
πΈ PHOTO TIP: The arch framed by red rock cliffs and desert flora close-ups (cacti, wildflowers). A standard zoom (24-70mm) works well for both landscapes and details!
π 12:00 PM β Lunch at Pisa Lisa

π¨ 1:00 PM β Tlaquepaque Arts & Shopping Village
β° 30 minutes | πΆ No hiking
Address: 336 AZ-179, Sedona, AZ 86336
Explored this Spanish-style village with colorful doors, shaded courtyards, and vibrant galleries π¨.
Perfect for midday photography when light is harsh elsewhere! The shaded areas provided soft, even lighting βοΈ.
πΈ PHOTO TIP: Portraits in courtyards, bright doors, and fountain details. Shaded areas minimize harsh shadows. Use a standard zoom for flexibility!
π 3:30 PM β Red Rock Crossing Sunset (THE Crown Jewel)
β° 2+ hours | πΆ Short walk from parking
Address: 4000 Upper Red Rock Loop Rd, Sedona, AZ 86336 Entry fee: $10 per vehicle (cash or card)
Captured Sedona's crown jewel: Cathedral Rock mirrored in Oak Creek at sunset π§β¨.

π₯ Group wading in the creek with Cathedral Rock behind
π Silhouettes at the water's edge during blue hour

πΈ PRO TIP: Tripod + ND filters for smooth water effects. Spray bottle enhances reflections. Shoot in RAW for maximum editing flexibility. This is THE signature Sedona shot!
β° TIMING IS EVERYTHING: Arrive by 4:00 PM for sunset at 5:15 PM. The light transforms the scene every 10 minutesβkeep shooting!
π§ CREEK WADING TIP: Bring water shoes or sandals! The creek is shallow but rocky. You'll want to get IN the water for the best shots.
π½οΈ 7:30 PM β Dinner at Mesa Grill
Upscale dining with a view to celebrate an EPIC photography day π₯.
Address: Sedona Airport (235 Air Terminal Dr) Cost: $30-50 per person

π DAY 3: Sunrise, Scenic Drives & Final Gems

π₯Ύ 0.5 miles | β° 1 hour | β°οΈ Easy

Pink Jeep Tours (has rentals + guided options)
Budget/Enterprise (check for Jeep Wrangler availability)
Stopped every 10 minutes for photos, culminating at Schnebly Hill Vista with jaw-dropping 360Β° panoramas π±.
The rocky terrain + expansive valley views = adventure photography gold πΈβ¨.
β° REALISTIC TIMING: This road is INCREDIBLY rough and bumpy. Even though it's only 12 miles, expect 2.5-3 hours total because you'll stop constantly for photos (and you shouldβthe views are insane!). Don't rush it. The scenery IS the destination ποΈ.
π³ Red Rock Pass Required: You need a Red Rock Pass ($5/day) to park and recreate in Coconino National Forest areas, including Schnebly Hill Road. Check if your Jeep rental includes one, or buy passes at visitor centers, trailheads, or online before you go!
β οΈ ROAD CONDITIONS: Check road status before going! After heavy rain or snow, the road can be impassable even with 4WD. Call (928) 203-2900 for updates.
πΈ PHOTO TIP: Wide-angle lens for sweeping landscapes. Standard zoom for Jeep shots with dramatic red rock backdrops. Capture the rocky road itself for that rugged adventure vibe!
ποΈ 12:00 PM β Bell Rock Up-Close Scramble
π₯Ύ 1 mile RT | β° 1 hour | β°οΈ Moderate scramble
Trailhead: Bell Rock Vista parking area (south side of AZ-179)
After seeing Bell Rock from our e-bikes on Day 1, we scrambled onto the formation for close-up views from the saddle π§.
The scramble required some light rock climbing, but the views? WORTH IT! π
π§ SCRAMBLING TIP: Stay on the main trail to the saddle. Some routes look tempting but lead to dangerous drop-offs. If it feels too sketchy, turn back!
πΈ PHOTO TIP: Dramatic downward views and group shots on the rock. Wide-angle lens for 360Β° vistas from the saddle!
π₯ͺ 1:00 PM β Late Lunch
Quick bite to keep the day on track π₯. Grabbed sandwiches to-go.

Hiked to the famous Chicken Point overlook for 270Β° red rock views ποΈ.
The flat rock outcropping is PERFECT for group photos with sweeping vistas behind you πΈβ¨.
Why "Chicken Point"? Local Pink Jeep tours drive right up to the edge of this cliff. Some passengers "chicken out" and get off before the dramatic finale!
πΈ PHOTO TIP: Wide-angle lens for the full landscape. Rotate your "models" so everyone gets their hero shot with the panorama!
π 5:00 PM β Early Dinner at Oak Creek Brewery
