⭐ Day 1: Arrival & The Golden Hour Glide
Route: BZN Airport → Jackson, WY | Stay: Cowboy Village Resort
Welcome to Big Sky Country! After landing at BZN at 9:35 AM, grab your rental SUV and make a beeline for WinCo in Bozeman to stock up on bulk supplies and snacks.
4:30 PM: Golden Hour E-Bike Ride. Rent e-bikes from Hoback Sports. Hit the Jackson Hole Multi-Use Pathway heading toward the Moose Entrance. Watching the Tetons glow purple and gold while you glide on two wheels is the perfect way to shake off the flight.
8:30 PM: Dinner at Snake River Brewing. Celebrate Day 1 with bison burgers and wood-fired pizzas at Wyoming’s oldest brewpub.
⭐ Day 2: The Private Sunrise & Snake River Float
Route: Mormon Row → Jenny Lake → Snake River
7:00 AM: Private Grand Teton Sunrise Tour. Early bird gets the light! We’re hitting Mormon Row for that iconic shot of the Moulton Barns. Then, we’ll beat the crowds to Jenny Lake Overlook and enjoy a scenic picnic breakfast at Jackson Lake with the mountains reflecting in the glass-still water.
2:30 PM: Scenic Snake River Float. A relaxing 13-mile float to see the park from the water’s perspective. Keep your telephoto lens ready for bald eagles and moose.
7:00 PM: Signal Mountain Sunset. Drive to the summit for a 360-degree view of the valley.
Dinner: Liberty Burger for a "Wild West" bison burger and a boozy shake.
⭐Day 3 – Tuesday, May 19: The "Big Loop" to Montana
Route: Jackson → West Thumb → Old Faithful → Hayden Valley → Grand Canyon → Gardiner
Vibe: The ultimate road trip. 190 miles of glaciers, geysers, and grizzlies.
5:15 AM: Sunrise at Oxbow Bend. We’re kicking off the day at the park’s most famous reflection spot. In mid-May, the snow-capped Mt. Moran creates a perfect mirror image in the Snake River.
8:30 AM: West Thumb Geyser Basin. A stunning walk where geothermal pools meet the icy shores of Yellowstone Lake.
📸 Photo Op: Abyss Pool. The deep teal water against the mountain backdrop is a portfolio essential.
10:00 AM – 1:00 PM: The Geyser Detour. We’re taking the turn toward Old Faithful to see the world's most famous eruption and tour the rustic architecture of the Old Faithful Inn.
Pro Tip: After the geyser, head 5 minutes north to Fountain Paint Pots to photograph the bubbling red mud and "Fountain" geysers.
1:30 PM: Fuel & Lunch Pivot. We’ll refuel the SUV and grab a quick lunch at Old Faithful Village. This is the last major "civilization" stop before the long push north!
2:30 PM: Hayden Valley & Mud Volcano. We’re cruising through the valley during the prime time for "Red Dog" bison calves.
📸 Photo Op: Dragon’s Mouth Spring. A steamy, roaring cave that looks like something out of a fantasy novel.
4:30 PM – 7:30 PM: Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. This is the photography "Main Event." We’ve timed this for the late afternoon when the sun hits the yellow canyon walls.
Artist Point: For the iconic long-distance landscape.
Lookout Point: For the dramatic, close-up power shot of the 308-foot Lower Falls.
8:45 PM: Sunset Arrival at 8 Peters Lane, Gardiner. We’ll pull into our VRBO just as the "Blue Hour" sets in over the mountains.
🗺️ For the Driver
This is a massive day (approx. 7.5 hours of pure driving time). To keep the logistics smooth, use the pre-loaded navigation link below:
👉 Day 3 Google Maps Navigation Link
Offline Maps: Ensure you download the "Yellowstone & Grand Teton" area in Google Maps for offline use, as cell service is non-existent for 80% of this route.
Gas Strategy: Fill up the tank in Jackson before departure, and top off again at Old Faithful Village (Waypoint #3) to ensure you have plenty of fuel for the Hayden Valley and Canyon stretches.
⭐ Day 4: Into the "Serengeti" & The Local's Ridge
Route: Gardiner → Lamar Valley → Mammoth → Jardine (Drone Zone) Vibe: Wildlife in the morning, high-tech flying in the evening.
6:00 AM: Private Wildlife Safari (Yellowstone Wonders). Our guide picks us up at the VRBO. Today is all about the Lamar Valley—home to wolves, grizzly bears, and massive bison herds.
📸 Insta360 Tip: Mount the camera on a long "invisible" selfie stick out the window (carefully!) during the drive through Lamar to get a "drone-like" aerial view of the bison herds.
1:30 PM: Mammoth Hot Springs Terraces. Capture the orange and green travertine at Palette Spring. The boardwalks here are perfect for walking shots.
3:30 PM: Yellowstone Hot Springs. Soak in mineral pools 8 miles north of Gardiner. The afternoon steam against the mountains is pure magic.
5:30 PM: The Self-Drive (Drone & Ridge Views). Since the tour is done, drive yourselves up Jardine Road (outside the park).
🛸 Hover Air X1: This is your Legal Drone Zone! Launch the Hover for an "Orbit" or "Follow" shot with the vast Gardiner basin behind you.
📸 iPhone Tip: Use the Ultra-Wide (0.5x) lens at the Jardine viewpoints to capture the scale of the Yellowstone River below.
7:50 PM: The Roosevelt Arch. Head to the North Entrance exactly one hour before sunset.
📸 Sidebar Shot: The stone arch glows neon orange during this window. Use Portrait Mode on your iPhone to blur the background and make the arch pop.
Dinner: Main Street Pizza. Watch the town's resident elk herd graze right outside the window.
🗺️ Day 4: Post-Tour "Drone & Sunset" Loop
This link is for your self-drive evening after the private safari is over. It starts from your stay and hits the best spots for aerial shots and golden hour photography. 👉 Day 4 Post-Tour Driver’s Link
Stops: 8 Peters Lane → Jardine Bridge (Drone Spot) → Devil’s Slide Viewpoint → Roosevelt Arch.
Duration: ~45 minutes of driving (plus your photography time).
⭐ Day 5: The Grand Finale
Route: Norris Basin → Grand Prismatic → BZN Airport Vibe: Neon colors and "Victory Laps" before the flight.
7:00 AM: Norris Geyser Basin. Catch the low morning sun hitting the steam of Steamboat Geyser.
📸 Insta360 Tip: Place the camera on a small tripod on the boardwalk (don't leave it!) for a 360° TimeLapse of the swirling steam clouds.
10:30 AM: Grand Prismatic Overlook. We wait until the air warms up so the "steam blanket" lifts, revealing the rainbow rings.
📸 iPhone Tip: Use the Telephoto (3x or 5x) zoom to get a close-up of the orange bacteria "veins" radiating from the blue center.
Warning: Microspikes are mandatory for the icy May trail!
12:30 PM: Paradise Valley "Victory Lap." Drive north toward Bozeman.
📸 Photo Op: Mallard’s Rest. Pull over for the absolute best reflection of the Absaroka Mountains in the Yellowstone River.
2:30 PM: BZN Airport. Arrive with plenty of time to return the car before your 4:35 PM flight. Fly home
🗺️ Day 5: The Grand Finale to BZN Airport
This link covers the entire final day, from the early morning geysers to your arrival at the airport. 👉 Day 5 Grand Finale Driver’s Link
Stops: 8 Peters Lane → Norris Geyser Basin → Grand Prismatic Spring Overlook → Mallard’s Rest (Reflection Spot) → BZN Airport.
Total Drive Time: ~8 hours.
Pro Tip: Ask your driver to keep an eye on the time at Grand Prismatic. You should be heading north toward Paradise Valley by 11:30 AM to ensure a stress-free check-in for your 4:35 PM flight.
Important Notes for the Driver:
Offline Access: Remind them to download the "Yellowstone & Bozeman" area maps for offline use before leaving Gardiner.
Gas Strategy: Top off the tank in Gardiner on the morning of Day 5. There are limited gas stations between the interior geyser basins and Paradise Valley.
Flight Check: The Day 5 route includes a "cushion" for traffic, but if you encounter a major bison jam in the park, the driver may need to bypass the Mallard's Rest stop to prioritize getting you to BZN by 2:30 PM.
📸 Gear Strategy Sidebar:
iPhone: Use Live Photos at the waterfalls (Day 3 & 5) then swipe up and select "Long Exposure" to make the water look silky.
Insta360: Use the "Reframing" tool in the app to follow wildlife or geyser eruptions after you've finished filming—no need to aim the camera!
Hover Air X1: Strictly PROHIBITED inside the park. Keep it in the bag until you hit the Jardine or Paradise Valley areas.

⚠️ Small Risks & Important Notes for May 2026
1. Weather Volatility is Real
Mid-May can bring snowstorms or cold rain that closes trails and makes e-bikes miserable. Your rain-day flip (e-bikes ↔ Jenny Lake) is good, but consider keeping Day 4 afternoon completely free as your weather buffer for a total washout day.
2.E-Bike Rental Availability & Recommendations No commercial rentals directly inside Grand Teton National Park boundaries (NPS restriction). Avoid delivery options due to overnight storage concerns at Cowboy Village.
Top Pick (Closest "In-Park" Start): Dornan's Adventure Sports
Dornan's Adventure Sports: 10 Moose St (or 12170 Dornan Rd), Moose, WY 83012 — right at Moose Junction (just inside park entrance); park your SUV and start riding the multi-use pathway north to Jenny Lake immediately (~16–20 miles round-trip, most scenic section).
Business Hours (Summer Season): Typically 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM daily (based on current data; call to confirm).
Season: Mid-May onward (weather-dependent; hiring starts mid-December for summer).
Contact/Reservations: Call (307) 733-3307 or email adventure@dornans.com — book early.
Reliable Jackson Town Alternatives (Drive ~20–25 min to Moose afterward):
Hoback Sports (Best overall e-bike selection)520 W Broadway Ave, Jackson, WY 83001
Business Hours (Summer Season): Typically 8:00 AM – 6:00 PM daily (varies slightly by source; confirm for mid-May).
Contact: (307) 733-5335
Teton Mountain Bike Tours: 545 N Cache St, Jackson, WY 83001
Business Hours: Vary by season (typically daily in summer; confirm mid-May opening).
Contact: (307) 733-0712
3. Day 3 is Heavy Driving
~260–280 miles round-trip (Jackson → Old Faithful → Gardiner). With wildlife/bison jams, expect 14–15 hours door-to-door. Totally worth it, but rotate drivers and be mentally prepared. If anyone is prone to car fatigue, consider cutting Mud Volcano or West Thumb to save ~1 hour.
4. Chico Hot Springs Timing
Pools open at 8 AM; you'd need to leave by ~10:15 AM for your 4:35 PM flight = only 60–75 minutes of soak time after the detour. Worth it if your group loves hot springs; otherwise, skip and enjoy the Paradise Valley drive stress-free.
5. Microspikes Are Mandatory
Schwabacher, Jenny Lake boat dock, Fairy Falls trail, and Norris boardwalks will almost certainly have packed snow/ice early morning. Rent equivalent to Kahtoola NANOS (e.g., CAMP Chainsen Pro) at Teton Backcountry Rentals in Jackson: https://tetonbcrentals.com/gear/traction-microspikes/ — ~$10–15/day.
6. Alternative to Sheepeater Cliff
Consider swapping the 5-minute Sheepeater stop for extra time at Grand Prismatic Overlook or exploring the West Thumb boardwalk extension (opened 2024). You'll already be thermally-overloaded by Day 5!
7.Chico Hot Springs Update (Day 5 Optional) Confirmed closed mid-April through mid-May 2026 for pool renovations—skip this or swap to Yellowstone Hot Springs (8 miles north of Gardiner, open year-round, ~$18–20 adult entry) on Day 4 afternoon for a similar soak.
8.Bear Spray Rentals Rent in Jackson (e.g., Bear Aware/Teton Backcountry Rentals) for ~$16 for first 1–2 days + $4/day after (capped ~$28 for longer trips)—includes holster and training. Cheaper and eco-friendly vs. buying (~$40–50/can, can't fly with it).
9.Road Openings Confirmation Your plans align well: Grand Teton's key roads/pathways typically fully accessible by May 1; Yellowstone's South Entrance and core loops (including to Old Faithful) usually open early-mid May. North Entrance year-round. Monitor NPS apps/sites in spring 2026 for plowing updates.
10.Stargazing Opportunity With a new moon around May 16–17, expect exceptionally dark skies—perfect for stargazing from Cowboy Village fire pit (Days 1–2) or Gardiner VRBO. Bring a headlamp/red light to preserve night vision.
