🏔️ ITALY 2026 SERIES: PART 4
Trading Trulli for Tre Cime (The Dolomites & Milan Finale)
📅 May 20-26, 2026 | 👥 6 Travelers
If Part 3 was sun-drenched Puglia with trulli houses and olive groves, then Part 4 is a complete atmospheric shift. We traded Mediterranean warmth for alpine drama, swapping the heel of Italy's boot for the jagged, towering peaks of the Dolomites—with a final Milan Airport stop before flying home.
This was the pivot we'd been building toward—six days in the UNESCO-protected mountains where Italian meets Austrian, where the food shifts to speck and strudel, and where every view makes you question if you're still on the same planet. From iconic Tre Cime to the postcard-perfect Val di Funes, we hit all the photogenic highlights without driving in circles.
🎯 The Master Plan
Base 1: Auronzo di Cadore (May 20-22) - 2 nights Base 2: Ortisei/Val Gardena (May 22-25) - 3 nights
Base 3: Cascina Costa near Milan (May 25-26) - 1 night The Shortcut: Flew Bari → Venice, picked up rental car
🚗 The Energy-Saving Strategy
After extensive research, we committed to an "energy-saver" approach that let us see MORE while saving energy for the views that mattered most:
What Worked:
Cable cars over climbs - Col Raiser, Seceda, Compatsch gondola
E-bikes at Alpe di Siusi - 3x the ground covered vs walking
Driving to viewpoints - Giau Pass, Sella Pass, Carezza
Strategic short hikes - Hit the highlights without exhaustion
No backtracking - Each day flows naturally to the next destination
📅 DAY-BY-DAY MOUNTAIN ODYSSEY
🌄 Day 1 - Wednesday, May 20
Puglia → Venice → Padua → Dolomites
5:30 AM – Wake-up in Puglia
Quick checkout from our Puglia accommodation. Said goodbye to the trulli houses and olive groves 🫒.
7:30 AM – Early Flight from Bari to Venice
Flight: Bari (BRI) → Venice (VCE)
Lands before 9:00 AM
💡 GENIUS MOVE: Flying from Bari to Venice compressed what would've been a brutal 8+ hour drive into a quick flight plus scenic mountain drive. This route flows naturally west-to-east with zero backtracking!
9:30 AM – Rental Car Pickup at Venice Airport
Picked up our rental car (mandatory for Dolomites exploration!).
🚗 CAR TIP: Book an automatic transmission if you're not comfortable with manual on mountain roads. Also consider upgrading to a larger car if you have 4+ people + luggage.
10:45 AM-1:30 PM – Padua Cultural Stop
Visited:
Basilica of Saint Anthony - Stunning frescoes and architecture
Prato della Valle - One of Europe's largest squares
Grabbed lunch at a local trattoria
This was our "cultural decompression" between coast and mountains 🏛️.
5:00 PM – Giau Pass Viewpoint
Our first "Holy sh*t" moment 😱!
The jagged Dolomite peaks rising from green valleys = instant Alpine high. Pulled over at multiple viewpoints for photos 📸.
⚠️ DRIVING TIP: Giau Pass has hairpin turns and narrow sections. Drive slowly, use turnouts to let faster cars pass, and enjoy the views!
5:30 PM – Lago di Limides
⏰ 15-minute walk from parking
A small alpine lake with perfect mountain reflections 💧. Quick stop for sunset photos before the light faded.
📸 PHOTO TIP: Arrive 30-45 minutes before sunset for the best golden hour light on the peaks!
7:00 PM – Checked into Auronzo di Cadore
Our Base 1 for the next two nights. Small mountain town, quiet and authentic 🏔️.
Where we stayed: Hotel or Airbnb in Auronzo di Cadore (book early—limited options!)
🏔️ Day 2 - Thursday, May 21
Tre Cime + Cadini di Misurina - THE CROWN JEWEL
7:00 AM – Drove to Tre Cime Parking
Cost: €30 toll road + €40 parking = €70 total
The toll road is steep but necessary—it brings you right to the trailhead at 2,320 meters elevation!
⚠️ CRITICAL TIMING: By 9 AM, parking was FULL. By 10 AM, cars were waiting in line. Arrive at 7 AM when it opens or you'll regret it!
8:00 AM – Started the Tre Cime Loop Hike
Trail: Trail 101
Distance: 10 km (6.2 miles)
Time: 3.5-4 hours
Difficulty: Easy (well-maintained gravel path)
The three towers—Cima Grande, Cima Ovest, and Cima Piccola—are absolutely massive when you're standing beneath them. Each angle reveals a different face of these giants 🏔️.
🥾 HIKING TIP: The trail is mostly flat and suitable for all fitness levels. But it's at high altitude—take it slow if you're not acclimated!
8:40 AM – Short Detour to Cadini di Misurina Viewpoint
⏰ ~40 minutes each way from the main trail
This viewpoint offers dramatic spires and towers that look like a fantasy castle 🏰.
Worth the detour? YES! Less crowded than Tre Cime and equally stunning.
12:00 PM – Lunch at Mountain Hut
Options:
Rifugio Locatelli (on the trail)
Rifugio Auronzo (at parking lot)
Traditional mountain food: speck, polenta, strudel 🥘. Expect to pay €15-25 per person for a full meal.
🥾 PACKING TIP: Pack layers! Even in May, it's cold and windy at 2,400+ meters. We wore fleece jackets, gloves, and beanies in the morning.
Afternoon – Return to Auronzo di Cadore
Relaxed evening at our accommodation. This is an out-and-back day from your base (unavoidable for this iconic hike, but worth every minute!).
🚣 Day 3 - Friday, May 22
Lago di Braies Row Boat → Geisleralm → Seceda Sunset
8:30 AM – Arrived at Lago di Braies
Address: Lago di Braies, 39030 Braies BZ, Italy
Parking: €6 per day
Arrived early before the tourist buses showed up!
💡 TIMING TIP: Parking fills by 9:30-10:00 AM in peak season. Get there at 8:00-8:30 AM for stress-free parking.
10:00-11:15 AM – Row Boat Rental!
Cost: €25-30 for 1 hour
Rowed on the emerald lake with the mountains reflecting around us = absolute magic 💚.
"Being out on the glass-smooth lake with the mountains reflecting around you is unforgettable. The early arrival for boat rental was crucial."
📸 PHOTO TIP: The classic shot is from the north end of the lake with the wooden boathouse. But being OUT on the water offers unique perspectives!
11:30 AM-12:30 PM – Lake Loop Trail
We walked part of the 3.5 km loop trail around the lake. Easy, flat, beautiful 🥾.
3:00 PM – Arrived at Ortisei (Base 2)
Checked into our accommodation in Ortisei/Val Gardena. This is our base for the next 3 nights!
Where to stay: Ortisei, Santa Cristina, or Selva di Val Gardena (all connected villages in the valley)
4:30 PM – Col Raiser Cable Car to Geisleralm Plateau
Cable car: From St. Christina to Geisleralm
Cost: ~€20-25 round trip
The gondola whisks you up to a high plateau with expansive meadows and mountain views 🚡.
6:00 PM – Seceda Ridge Sunset
From Geisleralm, you can hike to Seceda ridge for the most dramatic viewpoint in the Dolomites!
"Standing on that ridge as late afternoon light hit the mountains was transcendent. The green slopes drop away dramatically to reveal jagged rock walls. This viewpoint alone justifies the entire trip."
🌅 TIMING: Sunset in late May is around 8:30 PM. Arrive by 6-7 PM for golden hour. Last cable car down is usually 5:30-6:30 PM depending on season—check times!
📸 PHOTO TIP: Wide-angle lens essential. The ridge is a natural leading line into the Odle peaks. Shoot in multiple directions for variety!
⚠️ SAFETY TIP: The ridge has steep drop-offs. Stay on marked paths, especially if it's windy or wet!
🚴 Day 4 - Saturday, May 23
Alpe di Siusi E-bike Adventure
9:30 AM – Gondola from Ortisei to Compatsch
Gondola: From Ortisei to Compatsch (Alpe di Siusi plateau)
Cost: ~€20-25 round trip
This cable car takes you up to Europe's largest high-altitude Alpine meadow 🌄.
10:00 AM – Rented E-bikes
Location: Alpe di Siusi Bike Point at Compatsch station
Cost: €35-45 per e-bike for half day
10:30 AM-2:00 PM – E-bike Adventure!
Rode to Rauchhutte for lunch, cruised meadows with Sassolungo peak views 🚴♀️.
Why E-bikes Won:
The plateau is HUGE (56 square km!) and has gentle climbs
Covered 20-25 km vs walking exhaustion
Stopped for photos constantly, still had energy
Cowbells, wooden huts, meadows with peaks = peaceful perfection 🔔
📸 PHOTO TIP: Stop at the wooden huts with Sassolungo in the background. Classic South Tyrol scene! Morning or late afternoon light is best.
💡 ROUTE TIP: Ask the bike rental for a suggested route map. Popular loops include Punta d'Oro, Panorama, and Williams Hutte.
4:00 PM – Relaxed Afternoon in Ortisei
Explored the town, enjoyed mountain views from our base, had aperitivo at a local cafe 🍷.
🗺️ ROUTE EFFICIENCY NOTE: We stayed local to Ortisei today, saving the pass drives for tomorrow's route toward Milan. No backtracking = more energy saved!
📸 Day 5 - Sunday, May 24
Photogenic Gems: Sella Pass, Val di Funes & Carezza
8:30 AM – Drove Passo Sella (Sella Pass)
Stopped at panoramic turnouts with Sassolungo peaks rising behind us 🏔️.
This pass connects Val Gardena to the east and is one of the most scenic drives in the Dolomites!
9:00 AM – Sassolungo Viewpoint
⏰ 10-minute photo stop
Dramatic peaks, meadows, and that quintessential Dolomite drama 📸.
10:30 AM – Val di Funes / Santa Maddalena Viewpoint
⭐ THE postcard shot of South Tyrol!
"The classic wooden barns in green meadows with the jagged Odle peaks behind them—this is the photo that defines the Dolomites. Golden hour light would be even better, but morning worked beautifully."
📸 PHOTO TIP: Park at the small lot near Ranui church, then walk 5-10 minutes to the viewpoint. Wide-angle lens essential!
11:00 AM – St. Magdalena Church
⏰ 5-minute walk from parking
Tiny chapel in the meadow = Instagram gold 📸. Simple, authentic, beautiful.
12:30 PM – Lunch in Castelrotto Village
Pastel Tyrolean houses, bell tower, charming streets 🏡.
Grabbed lunch at a local restaurant—pizza, schnitzel, or traditional dumplings (canederli).
2:30 PM – Lago di Carezza (Rainbow Lake)
Also called Karersee in German.
Emerald water reflecting Latemar peaks 💚. The color is INSANE—like Photoshop but real!
🅿️ PARKING: €8 per day. The lot is small and fills by midday. We got lucky with a spot opening up.
📸 PHOTO TIP: Walk around to the far side of the lake for different angles. Midday light makes the water glow!
3:00 PM – Scenic Forest Road Drive
Stopped at misty pullouts for atmospheric shots 🌲. The drive through the pine forests between Carezza and our next stop was magical.
📸 WHY THIS ROUTE WON: This day flows naturally east through the passes, then southwest toward Milan. We hit 5-6 incredible photo spots with minimal walking—more variety, less windshield time, perfect flow with zero backtracking!
🛫 Day 6 - Monday, May 25
Mountain Farewell → Milan Area
9:00 AM – Checked Out of Ortisei
Said goodbye to the Dolomites 😢. But Milano awaits!
12:00-3:00 PM – Explored Bergamo
Stopped in Bergamo's medieval Città Alta (upper town) for lunch and sightseeing 🏰.
Take the funicular up to the old town for cobblestone streets, historic architecture, and panoramic views!
💡 DETOUR TIP: Bergamo is perfectly positioned between the Dolomites and Milan. It's a worthy 2-3 hour stop for culture and food!
6:00 PM – Checked into Hotel D120
Address: Via Amando Diaz 120, Via Sant'Ambrogio, Olona VA 21057 Italy
Our final night accommodation, strategically located between Milan city center and Malpensa Airport ✈️.

Brera District (artistic, charming streets)
