Chamber Music in the Strings Classroom
Clinician: Megan Benjafield
Friday, November 8 | Session 2 - 1:00-2:15PM

This workshop will offer the classroom strings teacher practical, useable advice on using chamber music as a vital part of the strings classroom. Discussions will include the benefits of chamber music, repertoire advice for various levels of players, ideas to work around uneven instrumentation, assessment and evaluation strategies and the logistics surrounding setting you and your students up for successful chamber music rehearsals.
Teaching the Lower Strings

In this session you will have the opportunity to learn about different techniques for teaching the cello and double bass. Come with all of your questions and concerns and we will discuss different ways to solve these issues. The workshop will include live demonstrations for a hands on experience.

The Ontario Strings Association is proud to collaborate with industry to introduce new strings titles to string educators in Ontario. Educators are encouraged bring an instrument to the session and join the core orchestra in playing through the titles. The session will include recommended teaching and rehearsal approaches to the pieces as well as highlighting pedagogical concepts covered in the repertoire.
Warm Ups and Games for Strings

Tired of the same warm up routine in your class room? This workshop with live orchestra will give you fresh ideas to augment your routine. These warm ups focus on a variety of areas s such as technique, ensemble, ear training and composition.
The Ontario Strings Association has been active for over a decade supporting and promoting strings education in the province. The organization puts on an orchestra festival affiliated with MusicFest Canada, an honours strings orchestra (OSAYO) for young musicians and is actively involved in providing educational resources and outreach to string educators in the province. This education clinic is part of a series of string workshops provided in partnership with the OMEA.

Megan Benjafield
A proud member of the board of directors for the Ontario Strings Association, Megan brings over 20 years of educational experience to this session. She has taught strings in three different school boards, the TLDSB, the TDSB and the HWDSB.
Pam Bettger
Pam is an active member of the OSA's board of directors and coordinator of OSA's annual orchestra festival. She currently teaches at Etobicoke School of the Arts.
Matteo Ferrero-Wong
Matteo currently works as an Itinerant Music Instructor with the TDSB and has been on the OSA board for the past year. He enjoys playing with different ensembles and teaching privately around Toronto. He studied Music Education and double bass performance at University of Toronto and is passionate about sharing what he knows about bass and low strings!
Douglas Friesen
Douglas Friesen is a music educator based in Toronto. He has lead improvisation, soundscape and creativity workshops across Canada and Latin America. He is a student of composer/educator R. Murray Schafer and has been an Instructional leader and a teacher in the Toronto District School Board. He is currently working on a PHD and teaches courses at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education.
Dayoung Seo
Dayoung Seo is an active board member with The Ontario String Association. She is an Itinerant Music Instructor in the Toronto District School Board and a part-time sessional lecturer at the Faculty of Music, University of Toronto. She is an active cello specialist at various TDSB events including Music by the Lake and conducts the string orchestra at Toronto Summer Music camp.
