The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) today officially announced that the Philippines, Japan and Indonesia will be hosting the upcoming 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup. The three-country bid was unanimously approved by FIBA’s Central Board after it and its only rivals, Argentina-Uruguay, made their final presentations in Mies, Switzerland.
FIBA’s new logo for the prestigious tournament features the Naismith Trophy, a sideways heart and the year 2023. The symbol reflects the passion of basketball players and fans and symbolizes their dreams of winning the coveted trophy.
Gilas Pilipinas has shifted its buildup to high gear as it prepares for the 2023 FIBA World Cup. The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) has also renewed its support for the national team.
Aside from the shelved continental showpiece, Gilas is also gearing up for the first window of FIBA Asia qualifiers set to run in February 2020 and the following months. Its preparations are being assisted by the SBP, which has made available stalwarts from its TNT Tropang Giga roster for the first window that starts on Feb. 24-28, including the likes of Chot Reyes and Nene.
In addition, Smart GigaPlay will stream the games of Gilas Pilipinas during the first window. Schedules include the Philippine team’s upcoming fixtures against Lebanon, Slovenia and Canada as well as replays from the team’s previous game against Saudi Arabia.
The PBA is making an aggressive push to boost its presence in the country’s sporting scene and Gilas Pilipinas is one of its key programs. The league has launched a new website called “PBA in the Philippines” that will provide basketball news, player profiles and live streaming.
Gilas will be bolstered with reinforcements to take on the challenging first window of FIBA Asian Qualifiers as they battle for a spot in next year’s global showpiece. It will be the first time that the PBA’s national team plays an official competition since it won the FIBA World Championship for Men in 2015.
Aside from the 2023 FIBA Asian Qualifiers, Gilas will also participate in the Southeast Asian Games in Vietnam and the Asian Games in China. It will also play in the succeeding windows of FIBA World Cup qualifying.
Despite the busy schedule, Gilas Pilipinas is confident it can pull off a successful campaign in 2022 and the FIBA Asia Cup scheduled for Jakarta, Indonesia in March. Head coach Chot Reyes cited the team’s preparations for the February window as “very encouraging” and pointed out that the Gilas roster has the capability to produce quality results.
The FIBA World Cup 2023 is slated to begin on August 25 and end on September 10. It will be the first time that three countries host the prestigious global cagefest. The 92-game tournament will be held at a series of Group Phase venues in the Philippines, Japan and Indonesia. It will feature the top 32 teams from around the world vying for a chance to represent their nation in the prestigious tournament.
