The Federation Internationale de Basketball (FIBA) is the world's governing body of basketball. It has over 213 national federations as members and organizes major international basketball competitions. It has been in existence since 1932 and is based in Geneva, Switzerland.
FIBA was founded on June 18, 1932 by the National Federations of Argentina, Czechoslovakia, Greece, Italy, Latvia, Portugal and Romania. It was created to govern the game of basketball and to formally recognize the sport of amateur basketball.
Today, FIBA has an extensive network of national basketball associations, and is responsible for determining and popularizing the rules of the game, regulating the transfers of athletes and providing a centralized body for the organization and administration of all international basketball. The governing body also has the power to set up championships and leagues for national teams.
Executive Committee
FIBA's executive committee is made up of the President, Secretary General and Treasurer along with six members from different countries. They have the powers to develop policies that will extend basketball's reach, make different relationships that will be most profitable for FIBA, and closely monitor how well FIBA does with the goals that it has set in place.
President of FIBA
The President of FIBA is elected by Congress for a four-year term of office and controls the Central Board, Executive Committee and FIBA's finances. He or she has the right to vote in Congress, only in case of a tie, and has the authority to appoint foreign judges and referees to FIBA's competitions.
Constitution & Bylaws
The FIBA constitution and bylaws define the duties of all FIBA officials. They include the responsibility of establishing the Official Rules of Basketball, defining equipment specifications for national basketball competitions, and appointing international officials to oversee national competitions. Its bylaws also outline the requirements for a team's facilities and FIBA's approval of any equipment or facility changes.
Organizing Committee
FIBA organizes the FIBA World Cup, the FIBA Women's World Cup and the men's FIBA World Olympic Qualifying Tournament and Summer Olympics Basketball Tournament, which are sanctioned by the IOC. Its FIBA World Cups are held every four years, and the Women's World Cup is organized annually.
Governance/Ethical Issues
Throughout the history of International Basketball, there have been many issues with human rights. These have included discrimination against religious minorities and the expulsion of athletes from participating in national competitions because of their religion or political beliefs.
Basketball is a fast-paced game that involves two teams of five players on a rectangular court, usually indoors. A player can only score if they throw the ball through their opponents' goal, an elevated horizontal hoop and net called a basket.
In the United States, the National Basketball Association (NBA) is the largest professional basketball league in the world. NBA teams are allowed to play in FIBA competitions. However, the FIBA rules differ significantly from those used by the NBA.
A FIBA game is 40 minutes in length, compared to 48 for an NBA game. A FIBA team that is able to pass the ball inside of the cylinder of the basket or on a fast-break may be in-bounded by a non-FIBA player who touches it before the referee does, and that contact can be called a goal-tending violation.
