Talking to the school and your child's teachers helps us work together as a team to help your child learn. You'll know the school rules and how your child is doing. Teachers are happy when you stay in touch. But remember, they're teaching, so they can't answer emails or phone calls right away. Don't worry. There are lots of ways to contact teachers.
Email or Message Teachers
Most teachers prefer emails or messages through the school’s online system (LMS/SIS).
Keep messages short and clear. Use Google Translate if needed.
Ask teachers if they speak your home language or if an interpreter is available.
Some schools use apps that you can download to connect with parents:
Many elementary schools use Class Dojo for communication.
Schools use School Messenger and Remind to send out texts to all families. The texts tell them about things like snow days or emergency closings.
TalkingPoints allows parents to message teachers in their home language.
Parent Square is a communication platform that offers translation features
Check with your school district to see if they use a digital communication app. Download the app and sign up with your email address. Check your school’s website for the link to download the app.
Parents can call the school to ask about attendance, events, or problems.
Ask if a bilingual staff member or interpreter is available if you don’t speak English well. You may need to allow time for the school to bring in an interpreter if no one on staff speaks your language.
Schools hold meetings with teachers to discuss student progress.
It’s a chance to ask questions and understand how your child is doing.
Parents can request an interpreter for these meetings.
Tip: Write down questions before the meeting to help communicate better.
Parents can go to the school to ask for help or to talk to the principal, counselor, or teachers.
Many schools have bilingual staff or translators to help immigrant families.
Tip: Bring important documents or notes if you need to discuss a school issue.
Ask for an interpreter – Schools must provide one if needed.
Request translated documents – Many schools translate report cards, schedules, and announcements.
Use translation apps – Google Translate can help with basic communication.
