When transitioning to distance learning from traditional classroom learning, it is important to discuss the advantages and weigh them against the obstacles, this gives the learner the advantage in finding what setting they are more comfortable working in to achieve their goal.
As an example, I went back to school after 30 years. If it were not for distance learning I may not have had the opportunity to take advantage of this ability to complete my degree. The time it would have taken with a full time job, a child in college, a grandson and the average daily life issues and agendas to deal with would have curtailed me going to sit in a traditional classroom setting. The fact that I can do my work, anywhere and anytime of the day, night or morning is such a encouragement and such a support system on wheels, that it works well with the very busy life I lead, while giving me the opportunity to finish my degree.
In the article, " Getting Ahead by Getting Online", it states that, “ Using the internet, students report a more engaging, classroom-type learning experience than was ever possible”(Pennell, 2002). I agree wholeheartedly since I am of a more reluctant personality type and being able to fully express myself often comes out better when I can write than if I had to explain in front of a group of people. So I think looking from a student’s eyes, these classes work very well for someone like myself and anyone else who is reluctant to speak out in front of a classroom full of people you do not know.
There are some minor disadvantages of online learning, but the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. One of the disadvantages of online learning I find, is your conversation can be misinterpreted or not understood well. Also if your area is having a power outage you tend to panic, if you have homework that is due at a specific time. Another disadvantage for me, is wanting that instant answer to a question and not waiting for the professor to get back to me. I also think the demand is more extensive, but that is neither a disadvantage nor advantage for me, it is expected I think since you are not in face to face classroom.
