Red List of Ecosystems

Online training session October -November 2020

Description:

IUCN is pleased to invite you to an online training course on the Red List of Ecosystems methodology and its possible applications.

The IUCN Red List of Ecosystems (RLE) is a standardized, globally recognized framework for assessing the status of ecosystems at local, national, regional and global levels. Assessments determine the level of risk an ecosystem faces, within a risk classification system. As an objective and repeatable method, underpinned by strong scientific-foundations, RLE measures drivers and trends that contribute to ecosystems risk.

Using a standardized approach, aligned with global standards, can help countries understand, systematically analyse and sustainably tackle the risks and threats that ecosystems are facing.

Date and time : 26th October 2020 - 30th of November 2020- 4 Modules (one week each)

Onsite Venue: One session per week will be organised (3-4 hours each) including a webinar and group discussions

The potential participants include :

i) Individual assessors conducting (or willing to) a Red List of Ecosystem evaluation of one Ecosystem.

ii) Government officials from ministries (may not conduct the assessment themselves, but rather be the final users of the assessments).

iii) Anyone interested in better understanding the RLE protocol and the requirements to carry out ecosystem risk assessments. Individuals willing to promote Ecosystem approaches and RLE in the region, are specially encouraged.

The training will:

    • Present the methodology including key concepts, scientific evidences, examples of completed assessments at national and global scales, and their applications;

    • Explain the set of five criteria and associated thresholds for performing evidence-based, scientific assessments of the risk of ecosystem collapse, as measured by reductions in geographical distribution or degradation of the key processes and components of ecosystems;

    • Introduce the 8 categories for risk of collapse: Collapsed (CO), Critically Endangered (CR), Endangered (EN), Vulnerable (VU), Near Threatened (NT), Least Concern (LC), Data Deficient (DD), and Not Evaluated (NE);

    • Illustrate key components of the process of undertaking RLE assessments, and data and information requirements, through hands on preliminary experience and interactive group work;

    • Through targeted case studies, provide an understanding not only of how the criteria work together to assess risk, but how this information can be used to inform different types of policies and management decisions.

Participants to training will :

    • Receive a fully certifiable assessors training (for those completing the assignments only);

    • Be capable of applying the Red List of Ecosystem methodology and conduct ecosystem assessments

    • Understand ecosystem risk assessments, ecosystem conceptual models, and develop concrete conservation actions accordingly
