Alex Joy

Alex started One Orange Sock as a conduit for his interdisciplinary art and design practice. The studio is purposed to merge his three major disciplines as a designer, educator and performer. 

Alex is a graduate of UNSW Art & Design (2014) with a double bachelor of Design and Arts Education. He is a qualified secondary teacher and is accredited in both New South Wales and Victoria. 

Alex has 15 years experience as an actor and arts educator. In 2015, when cast as the lead role in Avenue Q, he discovered puppetry. Since then, Alex can't get enough of the art form be it in theatre or television. 

Alex has written Drama curriculum for the NSW Department of Education. His other gigs include being an improvisation instructor, a State Drama ensembles tutor for The Arts Unit and an Artist In Residence for Regional Arts Victoria as part of the Creative Workers in Schools program in 2021. 

In 2019, Alex was the Australian candidate for the UNIMA Youth In Progress fellowship to Russia. He performed in the Ryazansky Smotriny International Puppet Festival under the direction of Boris Konstantinovo - Artistic Director of the Obraztsov Puppet Theatre, Moscow.

Upon returning from Russia, Alex relocated from Sydney to Melbourne to immerse himself in the central hub of puppetry arts and independent theatre in Australia. He began his podcast, Talking Sock which is now in its second season with over 20,000 downloads between 2020-2021. 

In 2022 Alex was selected to join the Associate Artist Program at Theatreworks, St Kilda where he began developing his new work, The Closet. In the same year, Alex was selected for the Lemony S Puppet Lab to complete his formal training in Puppetry Arts. In 2023, Alex was selected by La Mama Theatre for their inaugural Pathways program for emerging playwrights.

Performance credits include Winnie The Pooh The Musical Stage Adapation's national Australian tour in the role of Winnie The Pooh, Doogle for A Blanck Canvas' Greatest Show in The Universe.  Things That WriggleThat Wriggle and Squirm, Melbourne Festival of Puppetry 2023, Puppet Captain in Rob Lloyd's Shakespeare Aliens, Dennis in Bonkel Theatre's - Rollin', Private Function's Give War A Chance [Music Video] and sessional performer for A Blanck Canvas.

Alex is a proud committee member of UNIMA Australia where he manages design and communications. He is also a member UNIMA International Youth Commission.
