Title of the talk: Causal Discovery: Overview and Some Recent Advances

Abstract: Causal discovery aims to uncover the underlying causal mechanisms that drive the relationships between a collection of observed variables. It is a research topic with applications in many areas, including medicine, biology, economics, and social sciences. In principle, identifying causal relationships requires interventions (a.k.a. experiments). However, this is often impossible, impractical, or unethical, which has stimulated much research on causal discovery from purely observational data or mixed observational-interventional data.
In this talk, after surveying the causal discovery field, I will discuss some recent advances, namely on causal discovery from data with latent interventions and on the quintessential causal discovery problem: distinguishing cause from effect on a pair of dependent variables.

Mário A.T. Figueiredo is an IST Distinguished Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) and holds prominent roles in machine learning and data science. He serves as the Feedzai Professor of Machine Learning at IST and leads the Lisbon Unit for Learning and Intelligent Systems (LUMLIS), part of the European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems (ELLIS). At the Instituto de Telecomunicações, he coordinates both the Information and Data Science Thematic Line and the Pattern Recognition and Automatic Learning research cluster.

His research interests span signal processing, image processing, optimization, machine learning, and information theory. Over the past three years, he has published more than 30 papers, significantly advancing these fields. Beyond his research, Professor Figueiredo contributes to scientific development by supervising doctoral and post-doctoral students and delivering seminars, tutorials, and invited talks. He also was an associate editor for several journals and participates in various technical committees, strengthening his influence and dedication to advancing the scientific community.
