The location of the White House and its environment are very significant because of the surrounding monuments, landmarks, and events that have taken place in those surrounding areas. These famous monuments include the Lincoln Memorial and Washington monument, which are within walking distance of the White House. Other than the building itself, the White House is known for its surrounding greenspaces, particularly the White House lawn and Rose Garden. As you can see in the map to the left and the map on the 'Space and Place' page, there is a large amount of greenspace around the actual White House. These areas are significant because they hold many events people can attend such as Easter and talks by the President. Like any lawn, the goal is to make the area more beautiful as a background for television, visitors, and the news. Map- [17]
