The Singapore Pen Pal was my first time hosting a student from another country for a whole school day. We had talked over zoom prior to their visit, but hosting in person was much more valuable. We shared Starbucks in the morning and ate lunch together in the afternoon. We discussed how different our lifestyles were, but still found similarities such as our love for chai tea. We worked together in group of students from both schools to work on sustainable inventions and discuss global issues. Overall this was a very enriching day and receiving pictures from my Pen Pal when she contiued her trip on the east coast was so exciting. I am glad to know she enjoyed the place I love so much and I hope one day I will be able to visit her home country.
This Pen Pallexchange was virtual because the trip to the United States stopped running. Even the zoom calls were extremely beneficial because we got to know each other and expand our international community. We talked about government, our favorite foods, and how school looks different and similar for each of us.
This program was six weeks long with one zoom call every week. On these calls we discussed our personal beliefs and experiences. They were usually guided by the work we completed before each call to help the break out rooms move smoothly. My favorite activity was when each school shared pictures and fun facts about their cities. I loved to hear what students think of their own city and reflect on what I believe is important and unique to my city, Philadelphia.
