Flytipping

Recent research commissioned by The Peabody Foundation and published by local charity H&F Giving (1) reported

Environmental issues were also highly visible in the survey responses. Dog fouling, fly tipping, littering, poor waste management and lack of bins were repeatedly raised.

The Family Champions report frames these as issues affecting physical health, children’s safety, community morale and pride in place. When residents repeatedly see their environment neglected, it reinforces a feeling that the area itself is not being cared for.

Even before this report, the Old Oak Residents Association had been monitoring waste and litter issues with local councillor, Wesley Harcourt, LBHF Officers and Peabody Housing Trust.

Waste & Litter working group

This group meets approximately every six weeks to develop a plan to reduce waste and litter on the estate. Members include

• Local ward councillors

• Head of LBHF waste team

• Peabody Trust Head of Estates

• LBHF LET team

• Peabody resident

• Private resident

and till now have focussed on:

• collecting data

• identifying hotspots

• researching deterrents to flytipping

• benchmarking with other boroughs

We've also been lobbying for a mobile bulky waste collection, as many people locally do not have access to a car to go to the Riverside Waste Authority in Wandsworth Town and current LBHF costs are beyond the means of many too.

 Clean up

There's not going to be one simple solution. Different people have different priorities and lifestyles. However, in testing the Love Clean Streets app, we judge it to be reliable and effective, with the council collecting items within 24 hours of being reported.
