Trainee Riding School Instructor / Coach

Old Mill Stables are looking to recruit a Trainee Horse Riding Instructor. Previous experience with horses is required. Potentially your a competent amateur rider or groom looking to make the jump across into coaching and need the opportunity to gain experience of coaching groups and private sessions in a riding school environment. You will have the opportunity to get coaching hours under your belt with a wide range of horse/rider abilities, whilst also under the guidance of BHS accredited coaches.

An induction period to get to know our horses and regular riders will be undertaken with one of our existing instructors. As your ability and knowledge grow you will be given more independence, This will help you in preparing to take your BHS Stage 2 coaching exams, which can be undertaken at OMS as we are a BHS stage 2 assessment centre.  

Initially the majority of sessions will be with novice riders establishing walk trot and canter seats.

Trainee Instructors will need to develop the ability to safely and effectively manage a group or private session from on lead rein upwards, whilst making the session fun and interesting for the clients.

The instructor will need to develop the ability to effectively assess rider and horse combinations to enable suitable horse/rider selection and appropriate sessions times. Must be able to effectively communicate with the yard staff and other instructors when developing ride lists etc.

A client facing position that requires and professional and friendly attitude to the students and their parents/care givers. Additionally we will help with gaining additional CPD such as Safeguaurding / First Aid certificates 

An in date First Aid at Work certificate and safeguarding certificate would be advantageous. You will also need to be able to pass a criminal record (DBS Check) 

Working hours

Initially part time (but scope to do more) - hours to be agreed with candidate after interview, shift work on a rota based system

Salary/hourly rate

To be agreed - dependant on experience / agreed hours etc

Riding School Instructor / Coach

Old Mill Stables are looking to recruit a Qualified Horse Riding Instructor. Previous experience and suitable training is required. Teaching qualifications such as BHS, Pony Club or ABRS are expected in the successful candidate.

The position may suit an experienced riding instructor who has taken a career break or someone newly qualified seeking to expand and develop their experience. An induction period to get to know our horses and regular riders will be undertaken with one of our existing instructors.

BHS Changing Lives Through Horses Programme   Supervisor / Coordinator

Location: Old Mill Stables LLP


Hours: Part-time, 15-20 hours per week (Monday to Friday) potentially more hours for the right candidate if desired

About the BHS Changing Lives Through Horses Programme:


The British Horse Society (BHS) Changing Lives Through Horses programme is designed to improve the lives of young people who, for various reasons, are disengaged from education and society. The programme harnesses the unique benefits of equestrianism to develop key life skills such as responsibility, teamwork, confidence, and communication. By working with horses, participants can reconnect with their education and community, fostering a sense of purpose and achievement.


Job Summary:


We are seeking a passionate and dedicated Changing Lives Coordinator to join our team at Old Mill Stables LLP. This role is pivotal in delivering the BHS Changing Lives Through Horses programme, providing a transformative experience for young people. The ideal candidate will be enthusiastic about working with children and vulnerable individuals, using the medium of equestrian activities to support their development and engagement. Full training can be given to a person with the right attitude and some background in either horses,coaching or working with vulnerable people


Key Responsibilities:


        •       Following training and guidance. Plan and deliver CLtH sessions in line with the BHS Changing Lives Through Horses programme. Supporting small groups as they undertake activities on the horse yard or in the theory classroom

        •       Support participants in developing key life skills through structured activities and interactions with horses.

        •       Foster a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment for all participants.

        •       Help liaise with parents, carers, and external agencies to ensure comprehensive support for each participant.

        •       Maintain accurate records of participant progress and programme outcomes.

        •       Assist with general stable duties as required to support CLTH students


Candidate Requirements:


        •       Preferably hold equestrian qualifications, though not essential if you have experience in working with or coaching children or vulnerable individuals.

        •       Background as a teaching assistant or similar role is highly desirable.

        •       Some experience in horse riding and a genuine passion for equestrianism.

        •       First Aid qualification, DBS check, and safeguarding training are advantageous but not essential as can be obtained

        •       Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

        •       Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

        •       Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks.
