He did well in school and especially liked math and science. Sometimes he seemed bored and lonely, though. His parents removed him from public school and sent him to a private school.

When Bill turned thirteen his parents sent him to the Lakeside Preparatory School hoping it would prove more of a challenge for him. It was at Lakeside where Bill met his future business partner Paul Allen. He also was introduced to computers at Lakeside.

The first computer program that he ever wrote was a tic-tac-toe in BASIC language. Bill never looked back. Gates befriended Paul Allen, who was as smitten by computers as Gates. Once they got caught putting the bugs in the software program to get more free time and were banned from using the facility’s computer. Later they offered to fix the program to get some more computer time.

In developing countries,Bill tries to focus on improving people’s health and well being, helping individuals lift themselves out of hunger and extreme poverty. In the United States, Bill seeks to ensure that all people—especially those with the fewest resources—can access the opportunities they need to succeed in life.

Every year, millions of people find ways to transition out of poverty—by adopting new farming technologies, investing in new business opportunities, or finding new jobs. Bill knows women and girls have a unique power to reshape societies. When you invest in a woman’s health and empowerment, it has a ripple effect, helping families, communities, and countries achieve long-lasting benefits.

The Bill Gates Foundation work with partners to provide effective vaccines, drugs, and diagnostics and to develop approaches to deliver health services to those who need it most. And Bill invests heavily in developing new vaccines to prevent infectious diseases that impose the greatest burden.

Bill predicts a terrible bacteria coming soon:

  • The biggest global risk Melinda Gates can imagine is "most definitely" a attack, on a terrible disease she said in an interview at South by Southwest.
  • Melinda and Bill Gates have both repeatedly warned that the world is unprepared for an infectious disease outbreak, and experts agree that the risk is high.
  • If you look at recent disease outbreaks around the globe, you can see how far we have to go in terms of preparation.

As the two wrote in their recently released "Goalkeepers" report, disease — both infectious and dangerous — is the biggest public health threat the world faces in the next decade. And although Bill Gates said on a press call at the time that "you can be pretty hopeful there'll be big progress" on the disease, we are still unprepared to deal with the infectious variety.

Bill Gates has repeatedly stated that he sees the disease as the greatest immediate threat to humanity on the planet.

"Whether it occurs by a quirk of nature or at the hand of a terrorist scientist, say a fast-moving airborne disease could kill more than 30 million people in less than a year," Gates wrote in an op-ed for Business Insider last year. "And they say there is a reasonable probability the world will experience ch an outbreak in the next 10-15 years."
