I am an 19 y.o Singaporean Student who is sourcing for practical and meaningful causes to benefit the wider community. As part of my mission to serve our community (particularly, the disadvantaged) and aligning with my passion for volunteerism, I wish to bring my projects to the next level by engaging, liaising and sharing my views & ideas with NGOs / relevant organisations. However, before that, I will have to observe my society, seek advice from professionals, as well as gain more insights of my society which is what I am currently onto right now.
Apart from being a mainstream Pre-University student (Year 2) in Student Council, here's a few external yet relevant commitments that I hold:
St John Brigade - Corps Staff Officer (2018-present)
Volunteer at KTPH / YCH (2017-2019)
Volunteer at YouthCorps (2017-2018)
As I make progress in my observations and inferences, I wish to bring my project forward to NGOs who serve the similar mission, vision and purpose of service. With such an alignment of goals and aspirations for our society, I am willing to present my project with the relevant documents and statistics to backup my report. All of these, will benefit the society one way or another, making our nation a more inclusive and pleasant nation to live in.
As living humans, we all have the natural ability to be adaptable to our times and any of its changes. But it is a matter of how you adapt to what happens to you.
Every minute, something changes, it is an always-to-be-expected condition, representing the constant force of this eternal alteration and transformation.
Possessing a strong belief in 'equality for all', I feel very strongly of social issues relating to discrimination, prejudice & inequality in our society. In order to mitigate the lack of inclusiveness in Singapore, I am currently exploring areas of concern (through volunteering in Causes like Elderly, Children, Disabled) so as to get a proper sensing & gather primary data across different age groups. As I feel that Singaporeans are getting slightly more self-centered & unaware of their surroundings, I am looking into cultivating an inclusive society for the betterment of our current and future generations. I hope to allow Singaporeans, especially youngsters, to see the impact of volunteering & how it is beneficial for themselves, the people they are volunteering for and the people they are volunteering with.
Ever since the 2016 US Presidential Election followed by the Debate between the two final Presidential Candidates Donald J. Trump and Hillary Clinton, I was amazed by their language use as well as their stances being at different ends of the spectrum. This resulted in me furthering my interest by borrowing books written by Donald J. Trump - simply because of the tone & word use he had that aroused me.
I started to borrow books regarding those politicians and read about how each of them work under the government. Books such as "Donald Trump - Making America Great Again" left a lasting impression on me. The language was so well written and in an argumentative tone, which made it more exciting to read
Such an aspect of Politics made me more interested when US government started to implement laws upon Trump's entrance into the White House. It was so interesting to find out what went on in the minds of political leaders and the rationale for their actions.
This was when I found the reason for my unconditional sacrifice of time to watch political leaders speak for their countries (be it on a national or global scale) - What goes behind the thought process & implementation of certain policies.
Viewing how the Singapore Parliament debates on certain policies (such as the recent POFMA that was proposed by the Minister for Law in May 2019), it was interesting how, even the opposition party, exchanged viewpoints and discussed on an rooms for improvement. After finishing 3 rounds of Reading, the bill is passed on for approval and executed on ground level.
Singapore identifying itself as a democratic nation, we are receptive to feedback, are willing to learn from other countries and are sharing a common vision which is to do what is best for our people. I guess this is what really drives ministers and other parliament members / government officials to give in their best to brainstorming and debating.
This is just another example of my interest in practical, yet significant actions that one can take to positively impact our country. With the right moral ethics, I believe that one can value-add & benefit our nation's society.
