About the Oklahoma City Woodcarvers Club

For sixty years, the Oklahoma City Woodcarvers Club has brought together artists, craftspeople, and hobbyists who love turning raw wood into something meaningful. The club began in 1965 after Leonard Payne and Nathan Jarnigan met through a community woodcarving class offered at St. Luke’s Methodist Church’s School of Continuing Education. With organizer Carl Tanger and founding officers Bob Adkins and Richard Harrison, they formed an independent club—welcoming carvers of all skill levels. The OCWC has remained a friendly place to learn, create, and connect ever since.

OCWC is a 501C(3), nonprofit organization which promotes interest in, and appreciation of, woodcarving.  The club thrives on an interested, active membership that devotes its time and talents to a variety of programs which include: demonstrations, instruction, workshops, exhibitions, and social functions.  The club does have demonstrations in many of the local schools and libraries around the greater OKC area. 

Oklahoma City Woodcarvers Club: A Tradition of Craft and Community

Across the decades, members have demonstrated and taught woodcarving at fairs, libraries, schools, and art events statewide, partnering with organizations such as Rose State College, the OU Natural History Museum, the Oklahoma County Library System, and the State Capitol’s September Fest. We continue that spirit through our annual Artistry in Wood Show, classes, and community programs.

Looking Ahead

Reaching our 60th year is both a milestone and a new beginning. Alongside the deep experience of longtime members, we’re opening doors for new generations with beginner-friendly workshops, and hands-on demos—designed for anyone curious enough to try the craft.
