WOODCARVING JUDGING RULES & CATEGORIES 2024
RULES
Each exhibitor is limited to one (1) entry per category.
Limited to carvings worked on in the last 2 years.
Any item winning a BLUE ribbon in any previous OCWC Show is not eligible.
If there is only 1 entry in the category, a ribbon will be awarded based on the judging manual’s point system.
Additional credit may be given for originality.
If using a roughout, reference the creator, if known.
All decisions by the judging committee are final.
If a large number of carvings are entered in a single category, it could be divided into separate categories at the discretion of the judging teams.
2024 CATEGORIES
Birds (Not Waterfowl): single, any finish.
Birds: (Waterfowl): (i.e., shore birds, wading birds, swimming birds, decoys) single, any finish.
Caricature Animal: single species, any finish.
Caricature Group: any finish.
Caricature Human: single figure, any finish.
Carousel & Mythical Figures: Single or group any finish.
Carved Walking Sticks & Canes: Any walking stick and cane will be in this category, any finish.
Chip Carving: flat, three-dimensional, gouge – any subject, any finish.
Decorative Functional: any carved subject, any finish with a specific function or use (love spoons, bottle stoppers, etc.).
Floral: any finish.
Gourds: Wood-burned, carved, any style, any finish.
Holiday (Santas): any finish
Holiday: any finish (secular holidays such as Valentine's, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc.)
Instructor-assisted/Seminar Carving: carvings created in an in-person or online class or seminar. (it doesn’t matter if the instructor touched the piece or not.)
Novice Carvers (17 and older): OCWC welcomes those who have been carving for less than 2 years.
Marine Life: any finish.
Miniature: must not exceed 2" x 2" x 2", any finish. (including base)
Miscellaneous: This category is for your most imaginative and creative works.
Pyrography: Non-carved item, any subject, any finish.
Realistic Animal: single, any finish.
Realistic Group Subject: two or more figures, any species, any finish.
Realistic Human: single, any finish
Relief (High): High relief, natural or painted.(includes any undercutting)
Relief (Low): Low relief natural or painted.
Religious: any finish (may represent any religious philosophy).
Stylized: any subject, natural finish, grain must show.
Unusual Woods (includes cypress knees, cottonwood bark, and driftwood, which must be an integral element): any subject, any finish.
Youth Carvers: 16 and under. (Could be separated into categories if a large number of entries are made.)

2023 Artistry in Wood
Artistry in Wood 2023 was a huge success!
We had almost 200 visitors, more than double the number the previous year.
