My Family & Me

Sharing About Families

After exploration of our school community, we began to extend learning beyond the classroom to take a closer look at the roles, responsibilities, and dynamics of families. Together we wondered:

  • What is a family?
  • What are the roles of each member of a family?
  • Why are families important?
  • How are families the same and different?

Capturing Our Ideas

In order to share our ideas with each other as a whole Kindergarten, we created a special Flipgrid space. Each child was able to individually record a video with thoughts on something special about his or her family. This allowed for a meaningful culmination of our family unit as we created a safe space for our ideas through oral language, in addition to the book each child wrote about his or her family.

Kindergarten Learning Standard: Speak audibly and express thoughts, feelings, and ideas clearly.

There are lots of different ways to be a family.

Your family is special no matter what kind it is.
