Beta-Readers, Sensitivity-Readers, and Pinch-Hitter Information
The term "beta-reader" is a wide umbrella term covering a variety of tasks. This includes alpha-readers, SPAG, cheerleading, and story assistance.
Alpha-Reader: While we don't have a specific sign-up for this type of reading, we do have our discord. This can help people create ideas for their story and create a beginning.
SPAG: Spelling, punctuation, and grammar assistance. Basically, bringing out the red pen!
Cheerleading: This is someone who doesn't actively edit the work, but helps along during the writing process. They give encouragement -- your personal cheer squad with you the entire way!
Story Assistance: This includes the flow of the story, plot, research, and characterization. Since these can be wide-ranged categories in themselves, we have separated them on the sign up sheet just in case.
Wikipedia: "A sensitivity reader is someone who reads a literary work, looking for perceived offensive content, stereotypes and bias, creating a report for an author or publisher with suggested changes."
Sometimes, we write or draw things that are not within our base knowledge. This includes gender, race, religion, and health issues. A sensitivity reader has the unique knowledge of a subject and can read or look over your work to make sure you are not being inconsiderate or rude with your perception of the character/issue at hand.
We encourage all of our artists and writers to run their work through a sensitivity reader, especially given that OFMD is filled with varied characters.
Writing pinch-hitters are very important for bangs, as there is always something in life that doesn't allow an original writer to complete their collaboration.
If we need a writing pinch hitter, an email will be sent out with the slide attached. This is a first-come, first-serve system and we will send out a second email when a piece has been claimed.
