The Celebration of Water

We all live in California, with its golden beaches and beautiful forests. And that makes us appreciate one thing which holds a special place in our hearts - Water. From waterfalls to the Great Pacific, water is everywhere; and we cherish it in our everyday lives. But quite often people realize the value of water only through experience, like the 15-year drought that just ended in California. On the other side of the world, in the state of Tamil Nadu in India, people go through a drought, and then flooding every year. But no matter what, the people’s respect for water stays the same. And the festival that commemorates this return of water is Aadi 18.
There is an age-old tradition in Tamil Nadu. An edible lamp made using jaggery and rice flour, is placed on mango leaves along with flowers and a yellow turmeric-infused thread. This is then let to float on the water in Kaveri river. This symbolizes gratitude to water, the Kaveri river, for sustaining prosperity in the region. It is believed that this ritual will lead unmarried women to a happy married life. This festival is considered important for newly-wed couples, but it is widely celebrated by women and men of all ages.
18 families of Orange County Tamils celebrated Aadi 18 / Aadi Thiruvizha 2018 on Aug 4th, 2018 at Orchard Park, Irvine. We celebrated this with a decorated pot holding mangal (holy) water and everyone had a yellow string tied on their hands or necks as the tradition follows. We had speeches and songs from kids all the way to grandparents. The kids all played games like throwball, tag, and escape. The adults joined the kids in some of the games. We savored a variety of traditional rice dishes, which were brought by the moms.
Aadi 18 is an important festival for Tamil people. We are honoring water - the elixir of life - with this festival.

தென் கலிப்போர்னியாவில் வாழும் ஆரஞ்சு மாகாண தமிழர்களின் ஆடி 18 கொண்டாட்டம்

தமிழ் மாதங்களில் நான்காவது மாதமாக வருவது ஆடி மாதம் ஆகும். ஆடி மாதத்தில் தமிழ் நாட்டில் பரவலாக மழை பெய்யும். அதன் காரணமாக அணைகள் நிறைந்து நதிகளில் வெள்ளம் பெருக்கெடுத்து ஓடும். விவசாயிகள் தங்கள் வயல்களில் விதை விதைப்பார்கள் "ஆடிப்பட்டம் தேடி விதை என்பது பழமொழி ". ஆடி மாதம் பிறக்கும் தமிழ் மக்கள் ஆறுகளில் நீர் பெருக்கெடுத்து அதன்மூலம் தங்கள் வாழ்க்கை செழிக்க வேண்டும் என விரும்புவர்.
இதனையே இதனையே இதனையே ஆடியிலே பெருக்கெடுத்து ஓடி வரும் காவேரி வாடியம்மா எங்களுக்கு வழித்துணையாக எம்மை வாழ வைக்க வேண்டும் வேண்டுமம்மா சுமங்கலியாக என்ற தமிழ் திரைப்படம் பாடல் உணர்த்தும். இத்தகைய ஆடி மாதத்தில் பதினெட்டாம் நாளையே தமிழகத்தின் மக்கள் விமரிசையாக கொண்டாடுவர்.
ஆறுகளுக்கு சென்று புனித நீராடி கடவுளை வழிபடுவர் குறிப்பாக புதுமணத் தம்பதியர் சிறப்பாக கொண்டாடுவர் இந்த ஆண்டு கர்நாடகாவில் கனமழை பெய்து நீர் பெருகி மேட்டூர் அணை நிரம்பி காவிரியில் வெள்ளம் கரைபுரண்டு ஓடுகிறது.
தமிழகத்தின் பல்வேறு அணைகளும் நிரம்பி உள்ளன குறிப்பாக விவசாயிகள் பெரும் மகிழ்ச்சி அடைந்துள்ளனர் இந்த ஆண்டு ஆடி பதினெட்டாம் நாளை சிறப்பாக கொண்டாட வேண்டுமென ஆரஞ்சு மாகாண தமிழர்கள் குழு சேர்ந்து முடிவெடுத்தது.
அதன் அடிப்படையில் ஆரஞ்சு மாகாண தமிழர்கள் ஆகஸ்ட் மாதம் நான்காம் தேதி சனி மாலை 4 மணியளவில் ஆர்ச்சர்ட் பூங்காவில் கூடினோம் முதலில் குத்துவிளக்கேற்றி இறைவணக்கம் பாடப்பட்டது விநாயகருக்கு பூஜை செய்து வணங்கினோம் ஆடிப்பதினெட்டு பண்டிகை பற்றி உரையாற்றினர் குழந்தைகள் கடவுள் வாழ்த்துப் பாடல்களை பாடி அனைவரையும் மகிழ்வித்தனர் சற்று நேரத்தில் குழந்தைகளுக்கான விளையாட்டுப் நிகழ்ச்சிகள் ஆரம்பித்தன குழந்தைகள் விளையாட்டுகளை விளையாடி மகிழ்ந்தனர் இறுதியில் அனைவருக்கும் அறுசுவை உணவு வழங்கப்பட்டது உணவு வகைகள் ஒவ்வொன்றையும் ஒவ்வொரு குடும்பத்தினரும் ஒவ்வொரு தயாரித்து அனைவரிடமும் பகிர்ந்து கொண்டது வரவேற்கத்தக்க அம்சமாகும் இந்த நிகழ்வில் சிறியவர்கள் பெரியவர்கள் என சுமார் 80 பேர் கலந்து கொண்டனர்.
இந்த விழா ஏற்பாடுகளை குழு தன்னார்வலர்கள் ஒன்றுகூடி சிறப்பாக நடத்தியது வரவேற்கத்தகுந்தது இந்த இனிய சந்திப்பானது ஆரஞ்சு மாகாணத் தமிழ் மக்களிடையே மேலும் நெருக்கத்தை ஏற்படுத்தி உள்ளது இது போன்ற நிகழ்வுகளில் மீண்டும் தமிழ் மக்களை இணைத்து தமிழ் விழாக்களை சிறப்பாக கொண்டாடி மகிழ்வோம்.
