What does AFJROTC stand for, and what is its purpose?
The name “AFJROTC” consists of two key components: “AF” and “JROTC.”
AF stands for Air Force, reflecting the program’s connection to the United States Air Force and its focus on leadership development.
JROTC stands for Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps. The term “Junior” indicates that the program is designed for high school students, distinguishing it from ROTC, which is a college-level program.
What are AFJROTC teams, and are they mandatory?
AFJROTC teams are extracurricular groups that allow cadets to develop long-term goals, build character, and enhance their leadership skills. While participation is not required, it is highly encouraged, as joining a team can strengthen resumes, foster teamwork, and promote personal growth.
Our program offers a diverse range of teams, including STEM-focused teams, drill teams, and more. [Click here to view the full list.]
Is military service required to participate in AFJROTC?
AFJROTC carries no military obligation. The program’s primary goal is to develop cadets into active, responsible citizens by instilling leadership, discipline, and character. While most cadets do not pursue military service, those who choose to enlist after graduation may benefit from the skills and experiences gained in JROTC, potentially giving them a head start in their military careers.
What does it mean for AFJROTC to be a “cadet-led corps”?
O’Connor JROTC is a cadet-led corps, meaning that cadets are responsible for managing and executing nearly all duties required for the program’s success. This structure provides cadets with hands-on leadership experience that is rare in other organizations, helping them develop critical skills in responsibility, teamwork, and decision-making.
Are cadets required to wear uniforms?
All cadets are required to wear a uniform on Wednesdays. The uniform may vary, but it typically includes open-collar blues, closed-collar blues, or the corps’ polo and khakis combination.

Does JROTC provide community service opportunities?
O’Connor JROTC offers numerous community service opportunities throughout the school year, with cadets actively involved in giving back to the community. Some regular activities include volunteering at the NISD Special Olympics, assisting with O’Connor events, and supporting the San Antonio Food Bank to help those in need.
Is JROTC considered a PE credit?
Yes! Enrolling in JROTC for one year will earn you the PE credit required to graduate high school. This is due to the fitness sessions held every Friday, which include a mix of workouts and team sports such as flag football, basketball, and volleyball.
Cadets are required to wear the Physical Training (PT) uniform for each Friday PT session.
