Wavelength-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (WDXRF)

WDXRF analysis is conducted at the Center for Obsidian and Lithic Studies, Meiji University, using a Rigaku ZSX Primus III+ instrument. Quantitative analysis is performed by the low-dilution fused glass bead method, using rock standards provided by the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), enabling the determination of concentrations of major elements (SiO₂, TiO₂, Al₂O₃, Fe₂O₃t, MnO, MgO, CaO, Na₂O, K₂O, and P₂O₅) and trace elements (Zn, Rb, Sr, Y, Zr, Nb, and Th).

Energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF)

EDXRF analysis is conducted at the Faculty of Education, Nagasaki University, using a Rigaku NEX DE instrument. Non-destructive quantitative analysis of archaeological obsidian artefacts is performed using calibration curves based on the Japanese Obsidian Standards (JOS), enabling the determination of K, Ca, Mn, Fe, Rb, Sr, Y, Zr, and Nb. Geometric corrections are applied using the Compton scatter internal standard method.

Sample preparation rooms

At the Faculty of Education, Nagasaki University, the sample preparation facility is equipped with a rock cutter, a rotary polishing machine, a high-frequency fusion furnace, and a precision balance.
