Statement of Competency in Using Public Health Data for Informed Decision-Making
I am proficient in the complete process of utilizing public health data, from its identification to its application in decision-making, as demonstrated by my academic work. In my study on hepatitis B in Africa, I identified and collected epidemiological data from credible international sources (WHO, UNICEF, CDC) to quantify prevalence and regional disparities. The descriptive analysis highlighted critical gaps in vaccination and infrastructure, leading to the formulation of targeted recommendations, such as strengthening vaccination campaigns and health systems. This work illustrates my ability to transform macro-epidemiological data into practical, context-specific interventions.
My ability to conduct in-depth analytical investigations is demonstrated in the after-action report on the E. coli O157:H7 outbreak in Chile. I applied rigorous epidemiological methods: syndromic surveillance, a matched case-control study, molecular typing (PFGE), and traceback. The analysis identified a common source of contamination (sprouted seeds) with a significant odds ratio of 27, and led to evidence-based recommendations, including mandatory seed treatment and improved traceability. This case shows my aptitude for using field and laboratory data to guide precise and preventive control measures.
Finally, my study on the relationship between age and cognitive scores in dementia employed advanced quantitative methods. After random sampling, I performed linear regression, verified its assumptions, and interpreted the statistical results (p-value = 0.0026, 95% confidence interval for the slope). The conclusion of a significant negative relationship led to concrete clinical recommendations, such as enhanced screening for older patients. This approach demonstrates my mastery of inferential analysis to support evidence-based decisions in a public health context.
These three works attest to my ability to identify, analyze, and interpret diverse data (global, surveillance, clinical) to produce actionable insights, a crucial skill for contributing to informed and effective health policies.
