How is it possible for a machine to "learn"? on Tuesday August 1, 2023 at 9:00am-10:00am
Title: How is it possible for a machine to "learn"?
Date: Tuesday August 1, 2023
Time: 9:00am -10:00am
Presenter: David Czechowski, Joe Haas
Description of Session:
Artificial Intelligence has been receiving a lot of attention, but almost all of it is about what it does and how to use it. As STEM professionals, we should also have an understanding of how it works. In this hands-on workshop, we will reveal the secret magic of an algorithm that learns by removing the computer. While unplugged we will see how a machine learns to better understand A.I. This is a classroom activity that was developed in conjunction with the NYSMTP CS PLT and can be used with Middle School & High School math, science, and cs students.

Title: Teachers on Teaching: Sparking Curiosity
Date: Tuesday August 1, 2023
Time: 10:30am-12:00pm
Presenter: Josuha Paugh, Melanie Pflaum, Margaret Tanzosh, Sarah Slack & Danielle Belizaire. Hosted by Molly Shabica & Dave Wilson
Description of Session: Master Teachers on Teaching: Five TED-style Talks from Classroom Teachers
For more than a decade, MƒA has held an annual event titled Master Teachers on Teaching (MT2) that provides an opportunity for teachers to share powerful stories of their classroom, their students, and their personal journeys. Join us to hear from these five amazing teachers as they join the NYSMTP conference for the first time to share their engaging stories and provide behind-the-scenes insight on what it takes to prepare to give a 10-minute TED-style talk.
Danielle Belizaire
“Why? Why? Why?” After fielding plenty of “Why?” questions from her students, Master Teacher Danielle Belizaire highlights how the role of a teacher is a multifaceted one – and that it is often more than just teaching content.
Joshua Paugh
Master Teacher Joshua Paugh believes numerical values have the strength to get people thinking about issues more deeply. In his talk, “Numbers: Putting Things into Perspective,” he examines how numbers add perspective to help understand topics ranging from physics to social justice.
Melanie Pflaum
What allows a teacher to create waves of real growth and not just mastery of algorithms? Rituals, says Master Teacher Melanie Pflaum. In her talk, “Ripples: We Don’t Get to See Where Our Work Leads,” Melanie pays tribute to a wonderful teacher while reflecting on how a teacher creates lasting effects.
Sarah Slack
Master Teacher Sarah Slack’s talk, “Teaching About Climate Change to Save the World,” explores the reasons we aren’t teaching about climate change and shares an important message on why and how this needs to shift.
Margaret Tanzosh
"Debugging Curiosity:" Does the fear of failure prevent students from taking classes outside their comfort zones? Electives like computer science can encourage risk-taking, normalize fear and anxiety, and help inspire curiosity. In this talk, Master Teacher Margaret Tanzosh shares how she encourages students to explore unfamiliar subjects despite the pressure of getting good grades.
