Description of Session:

What environmental disasters gave rise to laws like The Clean Water Act and The Clean Air Act? Learn about the history of environmental laws in the US and current environmental issues leading to current changes in laws and regulations. Discuss issues surrounding Love Canal, the Cuyahoga River, the Donora smog and more recent issues such as the pollution problems in the Gowanus Canal, and in Onondaga Lake.

Description of Session:

Plastic only began to be mass-produced within living memory. Yet this man-made material has come to define and dominate human civilization. This talk will touch on the various harms caused — to wildlife, the food chain, climate, and frontline communities — by plastic and its production, with a particular focus on human health. Participants will learn why recycling is not a solution and come away with a better understanding of the scope of the plastics problem. Educators will be inspired to share what they've learned with their students and full of ideas for projects both in and outside the classroom.

After an assessment, what do you do with your students' results? During this session, I will demonstrate how the students in my Algebra 1 class organize and display their levels of understandings on standards-based questions and how these results can provide meaningful feedback and further explorations during class.

Description of Session:

Motivational interviewing (MI) is a collaborative, goal-oriented style of communication with particular attention to the language of change. It is designed to strengthen personal motivation for and commitment to a specific goal by eliciting and exploring the person’s own reasons for change within an atmosphere of acceptance and compassion” (Miller & Rollnick, 2013). MI can provide educators with a tool to enhance students’ intrinsic motivation to learn or change behavior, even in brief interactions. This workshop will provide an overview of how MI has been used in schools to date and will provide space to try out some of the skills.

Social-emotional learning (SEL) and skills like empathy and compassion are easily entwined with yogic principles. Through a trauma-sensitive, equitable, accessible, community-based, healing-centered SEL and yogic practice, students and teachers alike can come together to improve school climate and culture.
