Synchronous Course
The NYCPS Math shifts support the movement away from mathematics as a series of established procedures that must be demonstrated and explained, to mathematics as a discoverable, meaningful, and connected collection of big ideas and disciplinary practices.
This 2-day synchronous series is intended to introduce participants to the NYCPS K-12 Mathematics Shifts. The sessions help participants build a shared understanding of how the shifts support student-centered math instruction. Hands-on activities and collaborative discussions are used to connect the shifts to participants’ instructional contexts and leadership roles.
Total Session Time per part: 4 hours, 45 minutes. Time estimates can vary based on the depth of discussions. If you are to complete all parts at once, it is recommended that you allot up to 6 hours to include breaks and lunch.
In part 1, participants will explore the flow of math learning from sensemaking to formalizing, examine teacher and student actions that promote deep understanding, and identify how to plan for and facilitate low-floor, high-ceiling tasks that are accessible to all learners.
In part 2, participants will explore key concepts and practical strategies to support meaningful math discourse, asset-based instruction, and high-quality instructional materials (HQIM).

Tips for Engaging with the Course Series
Start with Introduction to NYCPS K-12 Mathematics Instructional Shifts: This course builds foundational knowledge. We strongly recommend that all staff complete it before moving on to the others.
Decide what comes next: The courses were designed to be completed in sequence, but each also stands on its own. Use the insights you gain from the first course to decide which shifts to focus on next based on your school's specific priorities and needs.
Encourage collaboration: Foster shared learning throughout the series by providing opportunities for teachers to discuss their reflections and insights together.
