As an ITT Subject / General Mentor, what am I expected to do?
The ambition for our PGCE students is that they learn from experience emerging not just as an Early Career Teacher but as a reflective, lifelong learner, committed to their own professional development throughout their teaching career. Our curriculum and training programme seeks to develop strong classroom practitioners who have an excellent knowledge and critical understanding of how pupil-learning is best supported by effective teaching methods, and who are highly effective in the implementation of classroom practices. As such, a crucial source of learning for the trainees is their classroom teaching experience which allows them to make sense of, and put into practice, the professional learning undertaken at the University and while on placement. The General Mentor’s job is to assist in this process through:
Organising a teaching timetable which provides opportunity to teach the available key stages
A weekly mentor meeting to discuss the theme of the week, progress made and next targets
A weekly formal lesson observation
Engaging with the Weekly Training Plan, associated theme/s & reading
Attending mentor training events / accessing mentor training materials
Providing trainee with access to departmental resources
Supporting trainee's personal and professional development throughout the placement
Completion of the trainee's Personal & Professional Conduct report
Writing a formal end of term / placement report
Further information can be found in the Mentor Handbook: https://sites.google.com/view/nupgcementor/documentation.
We pride ourselves in supporting our mentors throughout the trainee's placement, both face to face, when we undertake ISMOTs (In School Moderation, Observation & Training visits) - the formal termly observation of the trainee, and associated opportunity to discuss expectations, our curriculum and trainee progress with the mentor, and through:
The provision of a comprehensive Mentor Handbook (found here)
This website, with access to documents, videos and further reading to support our mentor's engagement and professional development
Sharing of a Weekly Training Plan throughout the trainee's placement (accompanied by the Mentor Meeting Support Slides)
Opportunities for synchronous and asynchronous training
Responsive email and telephone support via our Programme Secretary, Christian Kitson on 0191 2086532 or secPGCE@ncl.ac.uk , and through Lead Mentors.
