The Northern Territory Football League (NTFL) offers Umpires an excellent opportunity to use our October to March season as a steppingstone in their development. Use the quick-paced Darwin footy to stay fit and match-ready for your 2026 season.
Umpiring in the Top End from October to March offers a unique and enriching experience. The NTFL season aligns perfectly with the tropical climate, providing a vibrant and exciting backdrop for Australian Rules Football. Umpiring in the NTFL allows you to be part of a close-knit umpire community passionate about the sport, while enjoying the natural beauty and cultural richness of the region.
This role offers not only the thrill of being involved in high-level football but also the chance to explore stunning landscapes, immerse yourself in local traditions, and contribute to the sport in a region known for its rich football heritage.
Whether it's the excitement of game day or the opportunity to engage with the local community, being an NTFL umpire is a rewarding experience that combines professional growth with personal adventure.
NTFL is one of the largest competitions in the country with over 80 matches played each week across all senior and junior grades.
We are dedicated to ensuring a feasible and liveable earning opportunity for visiting umpires while ensuring we provide fair and merit-based appointments for all umpires. Visiting the Northern Territory as part of this program does not automatically guarantee appointments. Appointments for all umpires are based on performance both on and off the field. Professionalism, inclusivity, and delivering AFLNT umpire program goals greatly enrich our community and remain the primary basis for appointments.
During the 2025/26 TIO NTFL season, visiting umpires will have the following earning opportunities.
Match fees for senior matches range between $75 and $210 depending on the league grade. We anticipate that visiting umpires will be able to earn between $300 and $500 per week in match fees.
Umpires’ payments are processed fortnightly and paid on Thursdays.
Umpires on 2025 state league umpire lists who commit to 6-weeks or more of the 2025/26 TIO NTFL Season, qualify for a $750 travel support grant. Umpires who receive this grant are expected to actively engage in Umpire Training and other development activities such as the Umpire Mentor Program. Payments towards this grant will be made once the 6-week commitment has been fulfilled.
The Michael Long Learning and Leadership Centre (MLLLC) offers temporary accommodation for up to 3 weeks to assist you as you settle in Darwin. This option should be considered as a temporary arrangement only, while you search for more permanent lodging in Darwin. The first 2 weeks are $200 per week and the 3rd week is $300. Reservation information will be communicated via the invitation letter.
In previous years umpires used apps such as Flatmates or Flatmate Finders or using Facebook pages such as ‘Darwin Houses, Rooms, Rentals’ to secure accommodation.
AFLNT has multiple umpire coach positions available. These positions are available to existing umpire coaches from other programs, of all levels, and to those who want to develop new skills while in Darwin. This is a great opportunity to share your knowledge and experience with developing umpires, while earning extra income.
If you are interested in a coaching role for any umpiring discipline, please submit your umpiring resume to AFLNT Umpire Growth and Engagement Lead, Tom Urban, via email at tom.urban@afl.com.au Please include all relevant coaching experience to support your application.
Mentoring plays a crucial role in umpire development, offering opportunities for growth and competency enhancement. It is a key component of AFLNT’s Umpiring strategy designed to attract, retain, and engage new talent. Visiting umpires are integral to our Mentoring Program and are expected to actively participate. Your experience and guidance will help shape the next generation of AFLNT officials.
Mentors earn $45 per game. Running mentors, who officiate matches with junior umpires, receive an additional $45 on top of the match fee for that grade. All visiting and senior NTFL umpires are required to attend mentor training sessions to ensure the highest standards of mentorship.
