Program Director
John Pellerito, MD
Dr. John S. Pellerito is the Program Director for the Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program as well as Vice Chairman of the Department of Radiology and the Director of the Peripheral Vascular Laboratory at Northwell Health. He is Professor of Radiology and Science Education at the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell and is Co-Director of the SONICS ultrasound program at the medical school. He also serves as Medical Director for the Diagnostic Medical Sonography program at Northwell Health and Cardiovascular Sonography program at Molloy College. Dr. Pellerito graduated from New York University before receiving his M.D. from Albany Medical College. He served as faculty at Yale-New Haven Hospital before his current positions at Northwell Health. He is the co-editor of Introduction to Vascular Ultrasonography, in its 7th edition. He is the author of multiple original articles and book chapters. Dr. Pellerito is in great demand as a speaker both nationally and internationally and held multiple editorial appointments including Radiology, RadioGraphics and Journal of Ultrasound in Medicine. He was a board examiner for the American Board of Radiology. He serves on the Executive Committee for the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM) and is currently on the Board of Directors for the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission for Vascular Testing (IAC).
Associate Program Directors
Eric Goodman, MD
Dr. Goodman is a musculoskeletal radiologist, and an associate program director for the diagnostic radiology residency. He grew up on the North Shore of Long Island, did medical school at Stony Brook and residency/fellowship in New England, before coming back to New York to work at Northwell. At work his interests include Education and Educational Scholarship, mentoring residents and medical students, and musculoskeletal imaging research. Outside of work he enjoy spending time with his family, reading, writing, and getting outside. He chose to work at Northwell because of the combination of a proven record of academic strength and a focus medical education innovation. He really enjoys working with our Northwell residents. Eric believes they are constantly bringing enthusiasm and energy to the reading room, and its wonderful to be a part of the team that lets them realize their potential within the field of radiology.
Micheal Raj, MD
Dr. Raj is one of the associate program directors for the Hofstra/North Shore-LIJ Radiology Residency program. She is an assistant professor of Radiology and a full-time attending in the Abdominal Imaging Division of the Department of Radiology. She is also the director of Radiology Quality at the Long Island Jewish Medical Center and the Leader of the Northwell Health chapter of RAD-AID. She chose to be an APD because she love teaching residents and helping them get the best experience. As a former resident of the NS/LIJ radiology residency program, she could not think of a better way to give back to the program that had taught her so much. She is a huge cheerleader for the program, because she feels that it offers so many options to the residents in the clinical and non-clinical spheres. Residents from the program have proceeded to such a wide variety of fellowships and career paths, which makes her view our program as a huge success!
Stacey Weisman, MD
Stacey Weisman earned her medical degree from New York Medical College in 2008. She then completed radiology residency, including a year as Chief Resident, at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York (now the Mount Sinai West training program) in 2013, and a fellowship in Cardiothoracic Imaging at Massachusetts General Hospital in 2014. She worked as an attending radiologist at Beth Israel/Mount Sinai West from 2014 to 2018, and then at Weill Cornell from 2018-2021. At Cornell, she was director of the Cardiothoracic Imaging Fellowship. She joined the Northwell team in 2021. She has always had a passion for teaching, and particularly enjoys the 1-on-1 interactions with residents in the reading room. As an associate program director, she gets immense professional satisfaction in guiding the development of future radiologists and empowering them to provide exceptional service and patient care. When not at work, she is a top-notch chauffer and cheerleader for her sons' sporting events.
Drew Caplin, MD
Dr. Drew Matthew Caplin is an experienced physician specializing in Interventional and Diagnostic Radiology, with 18 years dedicated to education and leadership. He serves as the Program Director for the Integrated Interventional Radiology Residency Program and Associate Program Director for the Diagnostic Radiology Program. He is actively involved in curriculum development and national educational initiatives. Dr. Caplin's clinical focus includes Musculoskeletal Interventions. As a Fellow of the American College of Radiology and the Society of Interventional Radiology, he contributes significantly to quality patient care and sustainability in radiology. Outside of medicine, Dr. Caplin enjoys spending time with his family, various outdoor activities, and pursuing hobbies like cooking and building Legos.
Lana Malekan, MD
Dr. Lana Malekan serves as an Associate Program Director for the Diagnostic Radiology Residency at the Zucker School of Medicine at Northwell Health North Shore University Hospital/ Long Island Jewish Medical Center, and as an attending radiologist in the Division of Breast Imaging. A proud alumna and former chief resident of the NS-LIJ program, Dr. Malekan developed a novel board review curriculum, refined the recruitment and interview process, and introduced new initiatives aimed at improving resident wellness. Her efforts have fostered a supportive and enriching environment for the residents of our program across all post-graduate years. Deeply committed to the program’s mission, Dr. Malekan is passionate about sharing these opportunities with residents and applicants who are equally dedicated to professional growth and compassionate patient care.
Program Coordinators
Theresa Eacobacci
After graduating from Barnard College with a BA in Biology, Theresa started her career in healthcare in research labs. First doing benchtop research on mouse mammary tumor virus and then joining a radiology perceptual research lab. Theresa then stayed in the radiology department at Long Island Jewish Medical Center to become a Training Program Administrator. She finds radiology and graduate medical education to be exciting fields and is truly rewarded to support trainees along their journey from medical school through residency and fellowship. Outside of work she enjoys reading novels, wandering around art museums, gardening and spending time with her husband and family.
Tina Spitz
Tina has been apart of our residency for five years. Prior to healthcare , she had her own business and pursued a career in HR. She received her MA from Columbia University in Organizational Psychology and her BA from NYU in English Literature. On the days she is not working, you can find her doing hot yoga, hiking - exploring nature , zen meditation, vegetarian cooking, reading poetry & classic literature, visiting the plethora of museums in Manhattan and going out to brunch with her 23 year old daughter who lives in NYC.
She loves working at North Shore University Hospital/Northwell and with the radiology residency. It is the residents, leadership team, her colleague Theresa Eacobacci and the collaborative spirit that she most cherishes.
Senior Chief Residents
Haigreeva (Sai) Yedla
Sai was born in India, but has moved all around the east coast of America. He is passionate about teaching and mentoring, and plans to be involved in medical student and resident education in the years to come. He is currently applying for Neuroradiology fellowship.
Louis Mercado
Louis grew up in South Carolina and now calls New York home. His interests include organized radiology, quality improvement, resident and medical student education, and further developing the resident moonlighting program. He will pursue Neuroradiology as a fellowship after residency.
Interventional Chief Residents
Shima Tafreshi
Shima completed her undergraduate degree at Macaulay Honors college at Hunter college with French literature and biochemistry majors and a Spanish minor. She then went to medical school at Rochester School of Medicine where she found her love of radiology early on. During her third year she discovered interventional radiology, and made it her mission to become an interventional radiologist. She will be finishing her combined IR/DR residency in June 2025. Her areas of interest include women’s health and vascular ultrasound.
Joe Khoury
Joe Khoury was born and raised in Brooklyn & completed all medical training in New York, including a dual-degree DO/MBA at NYIT-COM on Long Island and his surgical internship at NYP Brooklyn Methodist in Park Slope, Brooklyn. He enjoys the variety of doing all cases, but is especially interested in endovascular interventions. He is very involved with program development and teaching, and will be an IR attending at Emory in Atlanta, Georgia next year where he will be able to share his passion with trainees.
