Our forests are more than a resource for industrial extraction. They are part of our communities, our livelihoods, and our future.
For generations, Nova Scotians have been told that the forest economy is about industrial logging and timber production. If we want strong rural communities and a strong economy, we have to choose between economic activity and ecological healthy forests.
But what if that isn’t the whole story?
Across the province, people are already building livelihoods, businesses and communities around healthy, standing forests.
They are part of an economy that often goes unrecognized.
At Nova Scotia Forests Forever, we think there’s a name for it:
The Rooted Economy
A Rooted Economy is an economy built around the places, forests and communities that sustain it.
It recognizes that forests have more value while they’re standing – and that healthy forests can support livelihoods and communities over the long term.
Across Nova Scotia, people are already building livelihoods, businesses and communities around healthy, standing forests. Maple syrup producers, tourism operators, recreation groups, wellness businesses, local food producers, woodlot owners, Indigenous communities, conservation groups, and so many others.
A forest is a long-term investment. The Rooted Economy asks us to think beyond what a forest can provide today and consider what it can provide seven generations from now – and how we can leave healthy forests, strong communities and lasting opportunities for those who come next.
