Now or Never

Who are we?

We are a group of grade 9 learners at Bishops Diocesan College and we are currently doing a project based learning curriculum called ‘Big Ideas’.

For our project we are attempting to implement more Marine Protected Areas so that we can reach a total of 10% protection in South Africa.

What is an MPA?

A Marine Protected Area (MPA) is an area of ocean or coastline that is specially protected for the benefit of both people and animals. MPAs help manage part of the marine environment to promote sustainable fishing, keeping marine ecosystems working nicely, and also protect the range of diverse species living there.

MPA's in South Africa

Only 5% of South Africa's ocean is protected and we need a minimum of 30% global protection to stop biodiversity loss.

Biodiversity loss refers to the mass extinction of species in a certain habitat.

What are we doing?

We are advocating and campaigning for more Marine Protection in the Western Cape through a campaign and educating people on the importance of Marine Protection through Social Media.

How will we do this?

We plan to do this by campaigning and advocating for MPAs by getting a backing through our social media to gain momentum with our petition.

How can you help?

You can help back us by signing our petition as well as follow our Instagram to get a weekly post.

By signing our petition it puts more pressure and government officials and could potentially mean the make or break between more MPA's and no MPA's.

By following us on Instagram you further educate yourself on the topic through our posts. Our posts share the harsh reality of MPA's in South Africa as well as other issues relating to the ocean.
