Sometimes our ability to do that is disrupted. For example, some parents are overwhelmed after the diagnosis of their child’s disability and hand over their agency to professionals with the intention of doing the best for their child. However, in doing so they can lose what Michael Kendrick refers to as their “natural authority“ as a family. If we have time towards the end of the session today we’ll play a video of Michael talking about natural authority.
Background: Michael is a lovely gentle child mainstreamed in primary school. His teacher had little experience with teaching a neurodiverse child. One day the teacher tried to hurry Michael into a new class activity whilst he was using his iPad. After some initial unmet request to put the device down, the teacher pulled the iPad from him causing him to pull it back and react with frustration, which the teacher labelled as agressivity against her. Parents were summoned to the Principal's office for the next day.
We used the All About Me to turn the situation around and put as the center question how the teacher can support Michael achieve his goal of being able to move from one activity to another. All people present at the next day meeting received a copy of All About Me to be discussed as a team.
